Quad bike

I wonder if a lot of quad work could be replaced with a cheaper 2 wheel bike. Would improve quad lifespan and reduce fuel consumption/costs.
Just traded a 2 wheeler in for my new quad. Like you felt it was worth a shout trying one. Great for rounding stock up and very quick and turns tighter and quicker, BUT a real pain in the butt every time you get to a gate having to put a stand down same with trying to catch a ewe , by the time you have the stand down and get off the ewe is half way down the field. interesting Experiment and the kids loved it but a no from a practical point of view

How many miles are we getting to a tank of fuel then? With my Yamaha 450 towing a snacker which will be a tonne in weight I’m getting around 60 miles to a full tank.

I find that hard to believe. Most bikes are around 20mpg consumption - cruising, without towing or carrying load (other than the operator).

The fuel tank on your 450 is 14 litres (3 gallon) - that's the spec from Yamaha website... 3x 20 - so that's an expected 60-ish mile range without towing

I will double check it again over the next two days but I’m sure it’s right unless it’s not counting the miles up correctly.

I don’t know but I fill mine up every morning because I use over half a tank and it won’t be doing any more than 30 miles on a morning
I’m doing 30 miles on my feeding round at the moment according to the bikes clock and only filling up every other day which I’m surprised about as my old bike only did just over 40 miles to a tank.

Yamaha 450 will probably use more than a Honda 420 or Suzuki but we are on hills and clarts all the time or both

Never had one & never will in a high crime area.

But they don't seem to last very long. All the David Browns bought when I left school are still working somewhere but not seen any Honda trikes in a long time.

What is the weak spot in them?
Normally the rope seal on the rear main and clutch.
On the Honda, one if the forks broke and we did wear out the driveshaft and headlight switch.
Apart from that ran faultless for a hard 10 years.

I bet the wheels make a big difference but do they hold much grub as the sides don’t look very high ?
No they don’t hold as much as the old portequip ones and port agri ones it held a lot of stuff. This holds 300 kilos or supposed to I fill it twice and feed some with bags a bit further away with the pickup but the clearance has helped and it travels far better than the atv tyred ones.
The wheels are like having the big wheels on the muckspreaders l a good help. You could put greedy boards on it easy enough

Only criticism of it would be it’s easy to get a ewe under the wheels with the single beam drawbar some of the others had a v shaped frame to keep them off

I had a 10 day old lamb run straight under the quad the other day, and felt it go up and over him. He got up, shook, and ran off, so no harm done.

Bloody lucky seeing as it was a Charollais, he might have thrown the bike over.💪
