    Highlander ewes

Well the rams feet themselves were atrocious. They all got foot problems whilst the ewes along with my other sheep were fine. I just got really mediocre ones I think but it put me off them

    Highlander ewes

Bred 300 horned ewes to highlanders when they first came to Ireland. They were an awful mixture of rubbish. Terrible feet and very tight on milk. Really wanted them to work but killed the overpriced yokes the following year. Couldn't give the wetthers away

    Shearing 2022

Had a guy a few weeks ago with 500 mules. Started clipping at 7am . By 7.30 I had to abandon them. Absolutely shocking bad. He agreed they couldn't be shorn for a month. Hadn't the heart to tell him it was starvation. Will advise him to drop his stocking rate when I'm back. In fairness he's only...

    Shearing 2022

Nicer than the feckers I was at this afternoon. 180 rouge x beltex ewes. Solid as rocks and slippery as glass. Super carcasses on them but barstewards to handle

    Lleyn tup for replacements?

I put Lleyn rams over every type of cross ewe I had and now have a selection of Lleyn crosses. If the ram is right they make super Hardy wee ewes that will wean their weight in lambs on middling ground. I've started crossing the pure lleyn ewes with belclare rams and they are fantastic sheep

    Shearing 2022

Been at them steady the last month and on the whole sheep are nowhere near ready anywhere. Even dry hoggs are about 3 weeks behind where they should be. I would say less feed and fert being used and the ewes are taking a battering

    Shearing 2022

My brother is a hoof trimmer and sheared with me for the last 10 years. Gave it up this year and says even the thought of it makes his back twinge. The result is very busy season ahead for me on my own. Big tallies are needed!

    Shearing 2022

Done 200 suff x chev ewe hoggets today. They were in great order but absolutely could do with sunshine. Harsh cold wind blowing all day. Far too early Pure sticky cheese on the necks and bellies. 250 hoggets tomorrow. I'm hoping for easier going

    Rappa atv winder

Hi have been trying the last 3 weeks to get a hold of the sales people in rappa and am told they are ringing me back. Badly need a winder as have more land took for the winter. Have rang once a week and politely asked for a price and estimated time of delivery. Have got neither yet. Is this...

    What ram for hoggs

More common than you think. Lambed 800 inside for a guy on my college placement. He wanted every ewe tipped upon her arse and suck the lambs. We had a good tight row and we got on great after that. He was convinced it was necessary or they would all die. Some bollix had told him when he was...

    training sheepdog pup

Sure do you not have" self trainers" over there? Every doggy man over here likes to roll out that bulls**t to new customers. " Ah sure they'll train themselves" It's all practice practice practice and lots of patience but be kind and easy with a young dog. See too many of them ruined by guys...

    Scanning time

There are some great scans here but also some very ordinary ones with big overfat ewes. Lambs were traded earlier and sheep got too heavy pre tupping.

    Feeding in-wintered ewes

Gonna rush out with a bag to mine just in case they're feeling unloved the poor wee darlings 😂

    Feeding in-wintered ewes

Cant have been that good. I keep my singles on closest thing to bare clay pre lambingand they are still too fat. There are boys l know that only feed silage and turn out a fortnight before lambing. No meal bill at all

    Sheep scanning courses

I train the odd person here and there. Gnt them to get a batch of early lambing ewes. I scan them at around 70 days and get the trainee to mark them on the far side. Then we keep running them through over and over honing teir technique until they match up with my scan. Its how i was taught by a...

Some absolutely super scans over here the last week. Lots 200% plus and it will only get better I always find. But of course the rubbish scans are at the same farms. Its all feeding IMO
