Let's say you had £25k, and wanted to get into livestock.

You have access to low imput permanent pasture (heavy land), and occasionally some rotational leys. You have access to a loader,

You have an old shed, potential access to straw, a creep feeder, and a serviceable ifor stock box, an old ring feeder in the hedge, and a bowser. You also have someone handy with cows on hand.

What would you do?

You can easily spend on cattle or cows, its a tie once you do though. Don't spend it all though as you have to keep cattle a while before you sell any youngstock.

How much of the £25k did you want to be left with after, say, 5 years?

Does his wife want cows to keep, cover their costs and grow to a viable business, or does she want 'garden ornaments'?
A bit of both I suspect.

Her husband, who won't be buying them, Is very much in the former camp, but if they can fulfill both roles then I suspect my friend, snd his wife, will be happy...

Go and buy some young native 4-8mths rough done stores. They will grow into money one day but you should of bought them by now as spring cattle buying fever will start shortly and prices will rise. You will have to farm around for 12-16mths

Ok, lets say my friend has 500ac of PP, which generally has other peoples sheep or sucklers on.

But his wife really really wants some cows of her own.....
Forget the cows and run sheep.

If you've cover crop or some other arable type land to winter them you'd run 2,000+ ewes on that amount of PP.

The right kind of genetics will wean 3,000+ lambs with very low inputs. Sell everything (less replacements) store in October and have an income of £200k+.
