I have a 30' by 30' machinery shed/workshop, and looking for ideas of making a loft space on part of it. above the work bench. and what materials to use. thanks.

What sort of dimension loft area are you wanting to end up with?

You could do 30’ wide and 4’ deep above your bench which you could board with one width of plywood. You’d have to have a supporting leg or two to span the 30’ and some timber purlins underneath to screw the boards onto.

Was thinking of doing 1 bay. So 15' by 8' rather than 30' by 4'. and not doing it directly over the benches, so it wouldn't kill day light. I could still store a trailed forager with chute down and a cabless tractor under the loft. Views on a stanchion suspended from a rafter to support the floor rather than one at ground level, where it could be in the way. If you know what I mean.

Good outside the box thinking idea there I like it. I would never of thought of that in a million years.

Are you handy with a welder? Or have you a local shed builder that could easily make you the steel work? Is it a newish shed or an older one your re doing?

The rafter will tend to be heavier on a newer shed I would of though. Smaller steel sizes sealed more common years ago and especially more so since CE marking they all look well engineered to me nowadays.

It's 6 yrs old, made from 7'x4' rsj. Yes I'm ok with the welder, a mag dril drill is something that I don't have.
