I hate to write it, but you can and it can be a decent one. I know a couple in Ceredigion who have done so, it's a wood frame build, it has three fair sized bedrooms and everything else you'd expect. It has a metal roof though, apart from that it is pretty good and came in for under £70k. But, they had the land and did the ground work and quite a lot else.

But, as above, land costs money... unless it is nationalised!

The land has value on the grant of a planning permission which conveys a considerable financial uplift in value to the owner of the land. Should society condone this?

The more pertinent question is: 'Should society condemn this?' I would say not, since our entire economic model is based on the profit motive. And, unless an individual is in the habit of giving away their possessions and time for nothing (i.e. working for nothing), they aren't in a position to preach to others who seek to make the financial best of what they have.

Valid points. But should (the royal we - society in its broadest context) society in effect differentiate between the profit (derived) motive from trading or purely capital appreciation. The uplift in value conveyed by gaining a planning permission may not look that way if a young person of moderate means purchasing a house. May seem like wealth distribution from the poor to the rich.

I like ho perceptiveness. The majority of folk do not own land almost by accident in many cases gains the uplift in value by gaining planning. Usually by deign of being in the right place at right ime. Might be a vote winner!

Your disagreement is JC may acquire your land for say agricultural value and then the state build on it, denying you the uplift in value conveyed by society granting a permission to build. I am just musing as to who should benefit from societies desire to build and to grant a permission to build.
