1965 MF 135 tacho cable

So I already have thread up about this tractor but I have another question I would like to ask; recently a new cable was fitted between the tacho (the gauge the displays the hours) and the engine block. Well, after the new cable was fitted the hour meter started recording hours again. But after a short while the hours stopped being clocked and I was wondering if the problem might lie in the tachometer or the fitting in the engine block. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Disconnect it at the engine and spin it with your fingers. You should see the tacho move. If it does isnt broken but the square on the end of it could be rounded where it goes into the engine

If the needles moving up but it's not recording hours it's the tachometer that's bust.

If the needle isn't moving either then whip the drive cable off the back of it and run the engine. See if the end of the internal drive is turning and hold the square end between fingers and see if it still turns alright. If it doesn't then it's either broken, not located in its socket at the engine end or the engine end drive gearbox has gone. Have a look in the end of the engine end drive gearbox and see if it is turning.

Sometimes the drive cable square end isn't properly located in the sockets at either end, although the outer sleeve is tightened up, or the socket at either end has worn round and it slipping.
