Looking to change my 2007 discovery 3 with 95000 miles and have seen a 2009 lwb shogun with 101000miles

Anything in particular to look out for if I go to have a look at it, and what would be the better vehicle, disco or shogun??

What to Look For
There's no excuse not to find a full service history on a fourth generation Shogun. If this has been neglected, walk away, no matter how much you like the colour or the optional extras - there'll be plenty more to choose from. Otherwise, there's very little to watch out for, apart from the obvious checks that you should subject any 4x4 to. Listen for whining gearboxes and differentials; look for leaky power steering, engines, gearboxes and driveshaft joints, off road abuse, tailgate and underbody corrosion and theft or accident damage. The Shogun is very well protected from rust, but the lack of a hose-down following exposure to salt water and constant mud wrestling may eventually cause the rusty red peril to attack. Mechanically, these cars are very durable.

The Shogun is, as ever, one of the more reliable options, and it appears to stand up to hard work very well. It’s all long-proven tech. There have been problems with the timing chain and tensioners of the 3.2 D-ID engine snapping — correct servicing is vital — and faults reported by owners include oil leaks from the oil pressure switch behind the turbo and sooting-up of a flap on the inlet manifold. These issues appear to be with pre-2007 and 100,000-mile-plus Shoguns, however. The 2007-on model was recalled early on for re-fitment of nuts and bolts on its propeller shafts and drive shafts, and for a new bolt on its gearshift lever.

At least with a shogun you won’t get too know the service department at the dealership the same. Im On my 3rd shogun all swb manuals a few friends have autos and there not too good at the mpg’s

I know someone with a 2005 shogun and it's shocking. Constant niggly faults and unlike LandRover there isn't an independent specialist in every town.

At least it's finally doing him a favour and slowly dissolving around him.

Yes, it's more reliable than a land rover. But when it does go wrong you've got fun and games and expense.

Oh and it drives like an 30 year old tractor.

I may have mentioned it before, so appologies. My shogun has spent more time in the local dealer than all of my 4 disco 4's put together!

What problems have you had? You do get the usual inlet manifold egr shooting up dual mass flywheel fuel tank rusting problems. What made you change from a disco?

Change of job was what put me into the shogun.
5 transfer faults (1 took 5 days to fix)
2 engine faults (1 left me stranded at side of road)
its had 4 batteries in 3 years
Its needed to be jump started most months.
Suspension is awful. It now needs all the bushes replacing as it bangs over the slightlest bump. Its only done 96k on a 16 plate.
It likes to put the drivers window down over night!. Three times ive got to car in the morning to think 'oh bugger, ive been broken into'' no car is locked and window is down.
Its the only car in my life thats left me stranded twice!.

Sound like you have a serious electrical fault that the garage aren’t fixing like something is not switching off and draining the battery hence how there’s power for window to operate. Think your dealer is taking the pee 4 batteries in 3 years! I have a 2013 with 155k and it clonks a wee bit from back suspension and I can’t see any bushes that are shot. Better not park too close too your house in case that electrics catch fire
