2018 Harvest snow causing problems on Canadian Prairies.

Think the harvest is less than 20% done in my area. And it's currently snowing and under a snowfall warning, while the sun is supposed to come out tomorrow there's really no warmth in the forecast.

Right now the hope is for good October weather to get the crop off but currently it's not looking swell. Wheat is heading from a 2 to a 3 and feed, canola already has reports of heavy shelling. Lots of crop is laying down which is tough on the equipment.

There will be a spring harvest going on for sure.

Take your point but in other news Illinois corn and soya harvest is running well ahead of usual schedule with record yields, or so I gather from the news reports! Here in South Lincs it is very dry with OSR failing - that I do no is a fact. Hey ho.

I follow Northern farmer on his You tube channel, think he's in northern Alberta,he was swathing osr in the snow the other day, crazy.

Whereabouts in Northern Alberta does he farm, what is local
community called. We had a go at farming at Bonanza Alberta, we did not last long (n)(n)
That said a great experience to look as taught me a lot about life ,although at great cost financially and mentally.

No corn and soy here. Any shortages caused by the crop not getting in is going to be wheat and canola. Maybe some durum.

I believe his name is Tyson and he’s around Grande Prairie?

Oops me being a bit thick:rolleyes::rolleyes:
I think he may be near Peace River ,as that is where the Peace Garden Chinese Restaurant is,as shown on one of his instagram pics. Visited Peace River many times,I used to do a big circuit from Bonanza to Peace River to Fahler to Rycroft to Spirit River to Bonanza.

I presume a dry frost will be ok for harvesting? It will be the snow that's causing the problem?
Yes a dry frost or dry snow are ok for combining cereals. Most wont do canola as it will shell out too much.

Not sure what the moisture would do though. Most years it gets caught under snow it drops to cold and snows and then they wait a bit. This year it’s rained and snowed so often that everyone is around 30% moisture. Would probably take quite a while in the cold for that to dry down, even if the frost and snow let them combine.
