Id aree with that. Apart from a new back trace last season ours has cost us very little to run over the years- a fraction of what any of the previous standens cost and now I know where there's a donor machine I don't see why I can't keep ours going for a good few years to come.

A more modern harvester will transform beet for you @DrWazzock. Even 40t acre at £30 a ton would seem depressing sitting on the cyclone, out in the open having your guts shaken out of you.
that cyclone harvester is 'dragging' you down mentally.....granted the era of cheap s/h tim harvesters are over but i ran one for 8 yrs doinf 25 acres/yr and didn't spend £1000 on repairs total....mind you there was always the chance i'd get a really bad one = gamble

why not take a yr off beet....it doesn't need to be a 'forever' decision ....keep an eye out for another harvester...if you find one (y),,,if you don't🤘......cereal prices are good so it's a good time to have a beet holiday

you don't wanna be packing spuds for someone else just for sake of it...only slight plus of our job is freedom at our own pace:)

NOW GAS AXE THAT FECKIN CYCLOME 😁

The thing is @spin cycle , when beet was over £30 a ton, lambs were making just over £30 a head and half of that was with £15 subsidy.
Lambs are now £90 a head and beet is going to £27 a ton ish.
Whatever BS might say, and maybe they genuinely can’t offer any more, there is no denying that the beet price has fallen seriously behind compared to other produce. Common factor seems to be BS are a monopoly customer where as anything where there is even some competition or semblance of an open market has improved. Lesson to us all about the wisdom of allowing monopolies to dominate markets.

UK farmers had chance to buy the monopoly, or at least controlling share. Conservative government sold it's shares July 22 1981 for £44 million to 150 city institutions, who then sold onto Berisfords the following year. Am very rusty now on what happened - someone else may know. Not that it is relevant. Your old Cyclone might now if I go talk too it.

Do you reckon the super major with bald tyres could pull it?🤔

y'know what.....seriously....she could on a dry day (y)....i tried that harvesters fore runner the juko 10......could go 7km/hr.....tank good for a km....light/ easy /manureverable ....only reason i didn't buy it was cos it didn't have hydraulic row steer which i'm pretty sure the '100' did:)

if you've seen it you're either looking for a beet harvester or very very very nerdy/sad😁....like me:bag:

Super major used to pull this.
But harvest took weeks/months especially with all the gleaning 🤦‍♂️

Last time that got used was on some "special" beet when I worked at Morley Research centre 🤐 25yrs ago 😳

To drag, kicking and screaming back on topic...we will have beet next yr. But half of our normal area (it's how it fits in for the rotation/what we want to grow after it/the price v wheat, etc etc)

‘Special’ beet hey? Intriguing…! Didn’t by chance have a yellow seed coat?
