Thinking 50% Spring Barley and 50% Spring Oats, here.

Same as in 1975, after an equally impossible autumn.

Only 270mm since 1st September this time (75% of 1974), but with similar results

Nothing wrong with that. Autumn23 in Ireland was extremely wet. Lots of barley and oats sown in the spring. A lot of it did more than 3 ton to the acre despite being sown in late April and early may.

What was 1975 like in Ireland?

Lots of barley and oats sown in the spring here. A lot of it did less than 1 ton to the acre because of being sown in late April and early May.

Too young to know re 75.
Remarkable year here as spring crops yielded so well. Another unusual think is it has hardly rained here in kildare for ages. Land is very dry .
I agree with your strategy of waiting. Probably be a great spring for crops
