Those that plant straight off the heap, does it have to be conventional? I’m thinking of going 10kg/Ha plus companions? Then if fails it can be a CC for spring beans…

For those who have persisted growing it, have you stumbled upon a forumla for getting the stuff past the critical early growth? Some are saying to put stuff like digestate or chicken muck on as the bugs dont like the smell? Others are saying plant hybrids.
We’ve always found spreading chicken muck before drilling and then drill as early as possible works well. Normally first week of August

A lot of rain as soon as the drill left the field was probably what got ours through that early vulnerable grazing stage.
Previous year it stayed dry and we lost it.
Then it was largely luck that we didn’t get serious amount of egg laying. But we have had quite a bit and the larvae have less to stunting.
HSS, Aspire. One field Subsoiler straight in with sprinkler and d ring press. Cambridge roll tight behind. Chopped straw. Big rain. Seedbed N when we thought it had established. Think it had a sniff of Mavrik once.
It’s a gamble.
Another field I heavy disced (as masses of chopped straw) and then just rolled then drilled an inch deep with the undrill by accident. Thought it was too deep but got enough plants to end up about right.
Subsoiler seed rate about 3.3 kg, unidrill 4 kg/ha but I reckon a lot perished as too deep with the uni.
Drilled from 17th to 23 aug. Some of the early stuff on disced ground had concerning levels of cabbage root fly in patches.
