2nd hand vehicles, does the world just build crap??

Ive been toying with the idea to buy a 2nd hand car to cut down kms on the ranger as its expensive to replace.

So ive looked into alot of vehicles and theres not much around thats not known for a list of main issues.

Has to be something that can handle communist grade roads (poor).

Honda by far have the brst wrap, maybe a CRV would suit?

Audi A3, worst wrap of all, ive hired these everytime ive visted europe.

Bmw x1, junk,is actually mini base with bmw shell on top.

Bmw 118 or 120 rear wheel drive, very good wrap, not suited to roads.

You can buy xf jags for ok money here, poor wrap for basic stuff.

Locally made ford falcon g6, good wrap except diff bushes, no biggie i suppose.

Id love a subaru XV crosstrek, but need to buy a manual, cvt crap.

Cars are built for features not reliability.

So is there a market void for decent vehicles that last?

My mate has a next gen ranger 2 litre bi turbo, auto blew up at 30,000km. When they first come out they were blowing donks...wtf???

Any suggestion for a 10kish sterling vehicle?? Most of whats in uk is in oz.

Maybe not your style but we have 2 Peugeots 2015-16 ish. His is a van and it gets no respect whatsoever. Into the fields, pulling trailers (10') and livestock boxes, very bad roads, farmyards on contracting work. Also used to transport small lots of sheep in the back. Great mileage but taxed as a commercial here.
Mine is a Teepee car variety. Very comfortable and both are great to drive. I got mine because driving the pickup everywhere was going to bankrupt me.

A van is not really suited as my mates will never stop with the rapist jokes...

The volvo xc 60 actually gets a decent wrap. Have had a look at them, interestingly not built in sweden.

Think they might be Ford based guessing at a kuga.

Citroën 2cv is what you want. Designed to carry 2 people and a basket of eggs over a ploughed field without damage. The designer obviously hasn't seen my ploughing 🤣.

No idea of a modern equivalent, Fiat panda cross perhaps.

After a couple of Toyotas we bought a nearly new Honda crv 5 years ago, coming up on 80,000 miles now and all I've ever done to it is change the engine oil which I do myself . Feels better built than the Toyotas. Going to change gearbox oil and brake fluid next week to try and get it to last as long as possible, my wife is a community nurses and has changed area, regularly does 100+ miles in a day now

'utilitarian' vehicles often start out cheap and reliable....then the ppl that drive them become the 'cool kids'.....then the 'knobs' want to seen as 'cool' so start buying them but Complain about 'refinement" so manufacturers react and the end version finishes up having little in common with the original🙄

eg vw beetle...mini...land-rover

car enthusiast told me a modern mini has the same 'footprint' as the first land rovers

The thing to do is buy a good second hand vehicle with a full service history, get it serviced by someone who knows the cars well, get the underbody cleaned and treated professionally and then get it serviced on the dot and treat it kindly.

So many people seem to drive cars in an unsympathetic manner. Screaming off the second the ignition key is turned, screaming down the road and coming to a halt and killing the engine. Expecting it to go through the next MOT and never show emissions warnings despite it's never serviced properly etc etc.

I actually think most of the good cheap stuff ends up over here due to our dollar being as weak as pee against the other currencies, the bar for vehicles is set lower than other countries.

Most NZ new Toyotas for example are the real poverty-pack ones, I bought a Corolla for $3k and thrash it, put 22,000 on it in 3 months.
When the tyres get down I'll flick it on marketplace and buy another $3k Corolla!

Nothing fancy, nothing f**ks out; good deal on an automobile in this day and age - IMHO
