*Edit - yeah that above*

We did some in spring at it burnt grass off and lowed my usual yeailds second cut was another story bumper cut :D

I can only put it down to disrupting the roots when they should really be concentrating on growing as opposed to being torn apart? If you can get on to do it DO IT! The ground has all winter to settle and less of a chance of any weed grass getting into the open slots I'd say. I will be subsoiling again next year but not till after second cut

Yeah 1st year we got our GLS we went straight in early summer and all the strips burnt off.

Thanks for the advice. Roughly how many acres can you get through in a good day (our ground is stone free with big flat fields) and how do you know the optimal Forward speed? More speed surely means more fracturing, but up to a point.

I used a 4 leg panbuster in summer after 2nd cut and because the ground was so hard, the machine was pulling slabs out of the ground so I was stuck at about 1-2mph. Still made a massive difference to grass growth, we have just taken our 4th cut and the sub soiled areas were noticeably heavier and dark green

I hire in a 4 leg pan buster after a demo of their machine it's an amazing thing.

I go at 6-7 K depending on ground conditions, anywhere between 9-12 inch down, that seems to do the best job. I have cracked 30 acre but that was a 6AM-11PM (had to press on) but normally about 20 acre a day shes happy with.

That's what I found, very dark green lush grass.

Erth will slab when ground is dry as legs are all in a line , sumo staggered and never slabbed, seen both working side by side .
20/30 acre a day no problem, 30 acre field easily , 6 fields of 5 acres no chance !

Rob, see Richard Irwin in Kilrea,
He hires out the Erth subsoiler and will be able to advise you as to what is best for your ground.
He may also be able to sell you one but he's first and foremost the dealer for k2 dung spreaders

Even with a mounted mole plough, a 90hp tractor is very small for two mole legs. It will depend on the mole size, depth and soil conditions, but without going beserk with ballast, you may be much better off with a single leg mole. I tend to use about 60 hp per mole leg with my 2 leg mounted mole plough and with a 150 hp tractor I still have to swap to one leg for the tractor to pull it at times.

The ideal conditions for moling are very drifferent to subsoiling. Moling should be done when the soil at depth is wet enough like plasticine to form a channel, where as for subsoiling the ground at working depth should be dry enough to shatter.

You can make a frame to take a mole leg or subsoiling legs, but generally best not to mix the two jobs at the same time.

Getting back to the sub soilers... Does the Sumo definitely lift the soil as well as an Erth? The videos on youtube don't make it look like it gets the same wave action going on. Only ever seen the Erth in person and it is seriously impressive, as is the Soilmate. Both great machines.

The lift is just as good the wave is because all legs in line ! The sumo is staggered leg , that why erth slabs it when it's dry ( ideal Subsoiling conditions) because the wave breaks and pulls up few ton of soil
