What do you (hypothetically) want to do with your life?

If you want to borrow a whole heap of money and spend the next 20 years tied to a cow’s tail working it off, then build a dairy.

If you want to work off farm as well, put it down to cereals.

If you want somewhere in between, then sheep & arable.

If you want to p*ss off all the neighbours and write books about eco things, then let it go wild and have a couple of lynx/wolves/beavers escape.
Grain storage ? Means of loading grain ?

I would shorten the rotation with 75 acres of turnips following the barly instead and get on and buy some of these cheap store lambs that are talked about, and split the beans with spring oats

There’s a lot more work with having sheep about.
With just cereals you could just work a couple of months over summer then a day a week the rest of the year spraying.
With livestock you have to be there everyday.

If you've never heard of them a bit of research or a visit will blow your mind with regards to all you have been taught about genetics....

Don't let the family connections to Dominic Cummings put you off the guided tour.
Make sure you also visit Chillingham Castle….there a couple of days ago…..far more than just a Castle.

Ok, bit more info. of ideas I'm thinking as it needs to provide a good full time income for a family:

  • Build a basic dairy and milk 300 jersey cows once a day as a flying herd
  • Continuous wheat
  • Continuous spring barley with cover crops in between
  • 180 spring calving suckler cows with calves sold as stores
180 s/cows , thought you mentioned "a good full time income for the family " you won't be seeing much of them then (the family)

£130 an acre or so I guess. Renting out not really an option.
£130/ac for letting someone else do all the work and having all the stress  I did not make anything like £130/ac on a lot of ours last year, sometimes I have to question the sanity of not renting out and question even more the sanity of those paying high rents.
