Just weighing up options to change a current 4 cyl McCormick for something a little bigger towards 160hp but no one seems to be able to give me a definative answer as to whether the new generation of 4 cylinders will compete with the 6 cyl equivalent hp tractors. We are typical dairy with front/back mowers and usual other jobs. Tia

The engines, depending on brand, should perform equally as well. What is should come down to is the size and weight of tractor you require, and specifically the wheelbase.
For my part the major drawback is that for long day's use, generally, four cylinder tractors have much smaller fuel tanks than their six cylinder equivalents. I insist on having tractors that do not require refilling part way through the day.

I think you are better with 6 when you go over 130 hp , generally you are doing heavier work with heavier machines and the longer wheelbase is better balanced.
Deere and CNH are now making 4cyl tractors in a long wheelbase just to confuse things even more. You can have a 250l fuel tank as well, that should be enough for a long day?

4cyl are handy but I find you have to keep them reving more
6cyl are better pullers but a bit longer in yards if tight.

Horses for courses I guess what's right for one isn't for another

Had a 100.6 same, demonstrated a deutz k120 just seemed weak on hills over the old 6potter, went for an older agrotron 6potter far better overall.

Saying that the little Deutz was compact handy with suspension and armrest control etc it did need weights on front to keep the nose down

I personally would go 6 cylinder for what your wanting to do a 4 will do it no problem powerwise just with a bit less hod off the ground

The days of the sub 140hp 6 must be numbered.

According to MF their 4cyl models equal or slightly better the max Torque of the equivalent 6 cylinder both at 1500rpm.

We bought a 4 cylinder Valtra 5 years ago, to replace a 6 cylinder NH. It is just as powerful, and the engine hangs on well. Yes, we have a big weight on the front linkage for ploughing etc, but for lighter jobs you have a handy compact tractor.
The last two tractors that we have bought have been 150 HP Kubotas. That 4 cylinder 6.1 litre engine is a beast, and torque is very low down on revs.

I went from a 4cyl T6040 elite(120hp) to a 6cyl T6.175 (140hp)
This is a fairly good comparison as have the same back end, tyres, weight block etc and I feel the 4 pot hung on better than the 6 even though 20 hp down. Yes it may be two cylinders lighter but I think the 4 cyl is the better choice. (Not for fuel tank size though, that was pants.)
