Hi has anybody any experience with 3G/4G routers. We have an isolated farm no dwelling or mains eletric and are looking to run a cctv camera and later perimeter beam sensor. So looking for some sort of notification when triggered. Had the pocket mifi on 3 and ok with coverage.
Main question found some on amazon at £110 and power supply is 240v plug how would I connect to a 12v car charger. Guess it can be done just this one is a bit pricey.

Supply is a 240V plug but that is the transformer that takes it down to 9V (I think) that plugs into the router itself.
I had a selection of cigarette lighter power supplies for various mobiles etc, just tested all of them to find the one that gave the right output volts. I will assume you know the fat bit of the cigarette lighter plug has a voltage reducer in it.
Tractor battery topped up with a solar panel to run it.

I had a Huawei B593s-22 several years ago (still have a spare one kicking about). I’ve changed routers subsequently, but still use EE as the carrier for 4G mobile broadband.

In terms of running it directly from low voltage DC supply that should be pretty easy, just get a barrel connector with lead (an in line fuse) to suit them hookup to your DC supply. I can check the secondary voltage on the power pack a bit later on.

I can link to the various threads and posts about how to run cameras etc remotely etc, to save me regurgitating it all again.

Huawei kit is usually pretty good and reliable, but would also recommend looking at Asus too, I have an N300 unit that has never given me any problems. Downside of using 4g is that the cctv will eat data allowance uploading the footage unless you can get it to do motion trigger uploading reliably.

I suggest you use a 12v DVR/nvr and don’t rely on the router to transmit live images the nvr or dvr can connect to router to transmit the data images alert triggers a decent heavy duty battery and solar should give you several days use, pick the kit for low power (may mean spending a bit more) or look for a dedicated “wildlife camera solution”

Some ideas here

I would also set up sms as well as data as sms can be more reliable in here circumstances here are special sims for alerts use that don’t run out cost about £8 a month but no minimum usage criteria like payg sims

@snapon The DC supply into my B593-s22 is 12V @ 1A using a 5.5mm barrel connector. So dead easy to hook up to an automotive 12v battery and solar arrangement should you wish.

I can sell you the spare one I have here...I can throw in a spare 5.5mm barrel connector with lead and and inline fuse for it too ;) PM me if you’re interested.

Here’s my own recipe for remote camera recording (local to the camera) on to a NAS drive and use the same box to remotely access live views of the camera (and the recordings) from your phone or laptop from anywhere with internet.

It’s possible to run this lot from a standalone solar install. You just need to watch your power budget. Give me a PM if you want any advice.
