got an 07 5460 massey started smelling a "bit clutchy" when been leading bales the take up point is fairly well up the pedal and some time if you dip the clutch to pick a bale up and semi keep goin at the same time your foot is completely off the pedal before the drive takes up. only a new to me tractor this time and not don't too much with it yet just wondered if anybody knew if this was normal for these tractors or think it need calibrating or new clutch (hope not!!) Thanks in advance Simmy

The clutches on these are all internal to the gearbox and run in oil, so there shouldn't be any burning smell unless something is deep fat fried. Take the dipstick out and check its colour and smell. If it is rank, you are in for a repair. I don't actually know of many that have actually failed in that way though.

The D6 gearbox has a very odd and sometimes disconcerting characteristic in that if you dip the clutch pedal at a 'Give Way', for instance, but re-engage before actually coming to a full stop, the clutch will slip like heck. Not sure is there is a software update for that and not actually heard of any complaints about it, but it is something I have noticed during a fairly limited driving experience of these models. If you continue to slip the clutch pack under such conditions with a heavy load, then I wouldn't be surprised if mechanical problems would soon arise, but I have absolutely no knowledge of such issues, either first or second hand.

I do not know of anybody who has burnt a fwd rev clutch pack out on a 5400 series Dyna 4, the pedal / biting point as @Cowabunga correctly said was a little hit and miss when only partially declutching due to the fact that the pedal calibration was done automatically every full stroke of the pedal. however this has now been made manual following a software upgrade around 18 months ago.

To be honest the only really cause of a clutchy type burnt smell is usually the brakes, although not so much on 5400 series and you would normally have the bypass warning lamp coming on before you noticed any other symptoms.

I posted the calibration instructions on here a while ago

On both D4 and 6 even if you press the pedal to the floor to hit the bottom of clutch switch, if the tractor kept rolling before re-engagement, something would slip like heck when speeding up.

Have no idea whether this has been sorted either by a software upgrade or the change of both switches to a potentiometer. Hopefully it has by now.

Never have heard of one coming to any harm from it but it can't be a 'good thing'. It only occurs in that specific circumstance and that occurs surprisingly rarely, possibly due to drivers avoiding it.

As you say, if the oil smells burnt it is far more likely to be caused by the brakes being cooked. Again that is rare for a 5400 and even 6400 below 6480 and depending on the driving style.

I have seen that yes, I think they still do it to be fair, its an acquired art to make it happen and a lot of drivers won't ever notice.

The new style boc switch will have no effect on it, all that does is do away with the troublesome bottom switch by detecting the lowest point of travel from the existing potentiometer and sending a signal out to the transmission controller
