A contractor told me last week he had just come from a farm that had 80 cats! I dont think they had a rat problem, but he said there was cat s**t everywhere.

If anyone with an appreciation of terrier work wants a giggle, seek out a copy of the autobiographical 'Tales of a Rat Hunting Man' by the late Brian Plummer.

The chapter where he encounters a tinker at the tip, who for 'a couple of bob' volunteers to drop a couple of rats down one trouser leg (tucked into his boots), and a ferret down the other. That book had me in *fits of laughter* ?

ratting with terriers and jill ferrets used to a real working class 'sport'......nylon stockings on wire coat hangers as nets for holes......horrible for ferrets though....had to use jills as need to be small but a sow rat cornered was a formidable foe :(

Many years ago we used to cut barley at a pig farm sited next to the canal. They were swill fed as liquid, mixed in a big tank. There was waste bread cakes and all sorts in heaps about the yard. The place was absolutely alive with rats, they were everywhere, hundreds of the horrible things. We had to bag the barley up from the trailer, and one of us bagged off while the other kept the rats away with a shovel, couldn’t get out of the place fast enough!
