Hi

Looking to purchase my first tractor for abit of paddock topping flailing brambles and running a log splitter also towing a 5 ton dump trailer. Im a tree surgeon with my own business looking for a little diversification and to make moving logs round easier.

See alot of cases around any other suggestions would like 4wd budgets around 10k.

Of the 2 I'd plump for an 895 or at the very least a later ( CaseIH ) 885.
I'd probably avoid the earliest IH 885s & would say the 895s were as a rule exceptionally well screwed together.
If your going to be towing a trailer, doing many miles try & find one with a faster gearbox !
If you go for a later one as described check the 2 speed power shift ( TA ) is working ok & the hand brake works.
Also insist that the transmission oil & filter is renewed using CaseIH hytran oil.
The engine oil is a simple 15/40 mineral oil.
Find a nice one & you'll be fine though.

Oh a 895XL here bought with 3242hrs on it didn’t go away till 14560hrs still going well if it missed a day which was rare and wasn’t started you had to bleed the brakes which was just the big o rings in the back hubs great tractor great cab away in front of most other tractors of the time loved it!!

As @spin cycle says you'd be better off looking for an 844. Not as common as the 885 or 895 but twice the tractor. The 844 is basically the engine of a 885/895 mated to the backend from the 56 series. A 40k gearbox was standard spec with 4wd.

If you buy any elderly XL cab look carefully at the cab, particularly the bottom of the front posts and the rail where the door shuts. Most are now quite rusted and may have been bodged.
The later the tractor ought to mean trailer brakes will be fitted.
Ideally check the road speed with a drive. Our 895 will do about 23mph flat out. Tbf that is fast enough as they are short and bouncy.
If you buy a 4wd check that it works. Slowly turn moving forward then select 4wd. You should see the wheels bite and then visibly jump when 4wd switched off.
If you have large twin rams on a trailer you may need to slightly overfill the transmission.

Can't see any reason why need to look heavier 844/845XL if tractor is used for topping, light trailer work and with log splitter.
If you are going to plough with furrow reversible, that's different story and heavier built 844 is right tractor for you. I would go to 95-series.

Literally will be collecting logs off site loading into trailer and bringing back to yard using a a 5 ton dump trailer. Possibly running a log splitter and loading IBC cages
