9ac of standing crop ‘well alight’ in Taunton field fire

9ac of standing crop was “well alight” during a fire in the Nailsbourne area near Taunton, Somerset, over the weekend.

Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue received several calls after 2:00p.m on Saturday (April 20) reporting a large fire in the area.

On arrival, crews confirmed that the 9ac field was well alight and used main jets and beaters to fight the fire.

A fire break was also created with the assistance of farm machinery.

Three fire engines, two off-road vehicles and a water bowser were in attendance. The fire was extinguished, and the field and crops were 90% damaged.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental by Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue.

Forager fire​


This fire came two days after Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue received a call reporting a farm forager on fire in Broomfield.

Fire crews from Taunton, Bridgwater, Nether Stowey, Wellington attended the fire on Friday (April 19).

Two fire engines and a water bowser were initially sent until, on arrival, the crews confirmed that the forager was well alight and the fire had spread to a crop field.

A further two fire engines and 2 off-road vehicles were sent.

The fire was in a forager in a 14ac field and was fuelled by high winds, Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue said.

It was extinguished using two hose reel jets and one main jet.

The forager was 20% damaged by fire and the field was 70% damaged. The cause of the fire was deemed to be accidental.
