Does anyone send lambs there please? There's a collection centre not far from here sending lambs there but I don' know of anyone who's sent any. Any views? What are they like with underweight lambs etc?

TIA

I know of someone who sent a load to try and never again. Apparently their weights were coming back 2-3kg deadweight less than their normal slaughterhouse

They'e regularly quoting prices 15 to 20p ahead of Dunbia but so do St Merryns and I know I'm no better off there due to different spec.

St.merryns want different spec to RDF and are rumoured to trim a lot harder! From what I've heard RDF may not be the highest ppk but the end price is often similar if not higher than the others..

This is true with Dunbia too. There's between half and a kilo difference in kill out between Dunbia and St M. Also St M want lambs from 16kg up and Dunbia take them from 14.5 kg up. This makes a huge difference to us. However if you have big lambs St M is better because you're getting more per kg so a 22kg carcass trimmed down to 21kg is still max weight at the better price iyswim.

ABP is the nearest plant to me (1 hr)
I use them for ewes if i can & lambs sometimes but this depends more on transport than anything else. If a lorry is going there then i will load up
They have a grid as all abattoirs do and stick to it, if you are in spec you will do well ---out of spec will get hit as with any other abattoir (I think 16kg is the bottom limit)

I have always been happy with the weights and grades --- and like the fact that they pay within a week (even if it is by cheque)
They are also happy for anyone to follow their animals through the plant as long as you let them know before hand
This is great as it lets me see what the vets are picking out in problem cull ewes

I've been sending lambs to abp yetminster for the last 2 years and apart from just once feeling like they killed out a bit too light, I've been very happy with them.
I've sent ewes a couple of times and been happy with them, but very glad the agent picked out the ewes the first time as I would have been stung hard had I sent all the ewes in good condition - they like them very lean.

We have in the past.

Always a better quoted price but the lambs are heavily trimmed before they are weighed, so you will probably be disappointed with your weights !

Sometimes less is more !
