Advance timing pump

Hi to all , I have a 1998 Jcb 520 50 , which has a Perkins Phaser 1004 engine that is slightly smoky ticking over.
I was told that if I advanced the injection pump timing it would help it.
It has a Delphi Dpa injection pump , do I move the pump in towards the engine to advance the timing or move it away from the engine to advance the timing ?
Thanks for any help on this .

I wouldn't like to say one way or the other regarding advancing injector pump ... it could make things worse
Have you changed air filter??
Is engine breather blocked or clear?
Have injectors been tested??

if engine rotates anti clockwise (looking at the front of the engine) then to advance the timing, you need to move the top of the pump away from the engine block.

Hi the fan turns clockwise when the engine is running . That is standing at the back of the machine , as the front of the engine is at the back . The opposite way it would be in a tractor , if that makes any sense to you ?

Yes new air filter.
Engine breather I assume is pipe coming from rocker cover - that's clear

Injectors got reconditioned about 2 years ago

These will be your issue so long as compressions are good. There's "reconditioned" and there's reconditioned.

Ok so if I take the injectors to get reconditioned again , what should I ask the diesel repair technician to do to the injectors to get properly reconditioned ?
I thought when I got them done previously , they would have be reconditioned properly .

I checked the wire coming to the therostart glow plug , wire is not live when engine is running.
Could the therostart glow plug also leak with no live going to it .

I think the biggest problem with machines like this is that the bores become glazed as the engine doesn't really get worked hard. Usually trundling around a yard and not getting put under heavy load. Too slow for road work and too little ground clearance to be on the silage clamp. Not much else to give the engine a workout.

Cousin in Africa once dropped a few grams of of Vim into the air intake of a Deutz engine while running then followed up with an oil and filter change. He reckoned it worked.
