Yes if a regular employee. With it being the inlaws you are not winning if you stop working there. Long term you might be winning more if you keep working for free for a little while.
As a person quite good at digging holes I can assure you, assuming working for nothing for years in the hopes of maybe getting compensated long term is a real good way to dig yourself a very big hole.
I'm not saying that it always ends in disaster but it's much much safer not to put yourself in that position in the first place.
If he has spilt from his wife and her parents have cut his wages off as a result as I suspect has happened he needs to have stopped yesterday.

Oh yes I agree. But finishing the harvest like he said he would might be wise. After that, yes get the fück away.

Don’t ever work for friends or family or always ends in pain

I know all parties involved in this personally and the situation is exactly as the OP has stated. He is being careful how much information he posts on here so as not to identify those involved.
Yes, but please can you relay to him that unless he explains the setup it's difficult to offer advice. If its just the relationship with the partner that is broken that's one thing, but if the just the relationship with partners parents that has broken down that's another matter. But if its a breakdown in relationship with both partner & partner's parents [The employer?] its beyond the scope of the forum to advise and needs the involvement of a solicitor.

The OP is looking at the Thomas Higgins route for now with being self employed and then proceeding further if necessary.
Too many details will make the parties involved easily identifiable to those who may know them on here hence the lack of information as to relationship breakdowns etc. The OP would rather extract what he’s owed before the public flogging commences
