Ticks are usually around most in the spring and summer when its warm and moist. Many wormers will kill ticks (ivermectin or a pyrethrin I think) and there are definately spot treatments that get rid of them. Not sure about there, but here they can carry lots of nasty diseases so be sure you wash your hands when you touch them. They can't usually make things sick unless they are attached for awhile, but better to be cautious. Be sure to check yourself after you've been out as well.
