Job Description
Team/department purpose
Crop Health & Protection team

Support Senior Scientist in management of the research/ programme within the area of Extensions of Authorisations for Minor Use and Emergency Approvals, from inception to report by liaison with key stakeholders such as grower associations, Horticulture Panels and Crop Protection Companies, provide support for designated cross sector/division technical topics in the area of pesticide regulation.

Role responsibilities
• Provide technical and strategic support to Senior Scientist for the minor and emergency uses programme.
• Work with AHDB colleagues and external stakeholders to ensure that gaps in the crop protection armoury are identified.
• Support and deliver the procurement of residue data collection studies and any other studies required to support the minor and emergency uses regulatory process, including negotiating external co-funding partnership arrangements as and when possible.
• Exploit all opportunities from AHDB in respect of cross-sector working, by taking a supportive role in cross-sector crop protection initiatives.
• Ensure full coordination of minor and emergency uses activities with the AHDB Horticulture Communications Team to ensure timely and efficient delivery of outputs from the minor and emergency uses programme.
• Line manage and functionally direct the work of the crop protection scientific officer (pesticide regulation) Band C as required and as appropriate
• Support the management of residue data procurement contracts and resolve any problems arising.
• Deliver to the running of the AHDB Horticulture Crop Protection database.
• Maintain and update scientific and technical knowledge in field of expertise.
• Work closely with plant protection product manufacturers to ensure full visibility (within normal commercial constraints) of their product development portfolio.
• Work closely with colleagues in AHDB to maximise effective internal collaboration throughout AHDB to add value to AHDB work for levy payers.
• Act as a point of contact for horticulture industry stakeholders (including growers, grower associations, supply chain businesses, UK and overseas research contractors and other RKE funders) for the development/management of the minor and emergency uses programme.
• Act as a point of liaison between AHDB and UK regulator (CRD) on minor and emergency use issues, represent AHDB at European Minor Uses Group meetings and liaise with broader international minor use initiatives (e.g. USDA IR-4 programme).
• Comply with all health, safety and welfare provisions of relevant UK legislation and AHDB policy.
• Safeguard the health, safety and welfare of staff at HQ and off-site in accordance with legislation and AHDB policy.
• Operate in compliance with EU/UK government legislation, including EU State Aid regulation.
• Contribute to the drafting/editing of AHDB policy and process documentation.
• Comply fully with all relevant AHDB policies and processes.
• Behave responsibly and professionally and comply fully with AHDB policy and line management directives.

Person specification
• Must have an honours degree or extensive practical experience in a relevant scientific discipline and may have a post-graduate research degree or research experience.
• May have a professional qualification or extensive experience in a managerial or commercial discipline.
• Must have broad knowledge of the horticulture industry and be respected by, and able to influence, major stakeholder organisations.
• Must have broad knowledge of UK crop protection issues, the availability and development of new plant protection products and be respected by, and able to influence, all stakeholders involved in the minor uses arena.
• Should have broad knowledge and working experience of organisational management systems.
• Must have a strong track record in programme/project development
Hours: 35 (We will consider a part time role at 4 days per week for the right candidate)
