AHL2 - Winter Bird Food

It will be interesting to see if Andersons, John Nix or similar start to drop beans and OSR when carrying out their gross margin calculations that they publish each year and instead publish costings for various SFI options such as AHL2 when considering break crops.

They should keep putting in the costings/GMs to show what a waste of time they are at present values, plus they should include SFI options as they are a crop to be grown,

Can I presume this is Spring Barley and AHL2 established in the same year? When is Spring Barley usually harvested in Cumbria? Wholecrop earlier. Are neighbours planning wholecrop or dry harvest, and intended sowing date of the AHL2?

Possibly alternate crops of SB and ahl2?

AHL1 will follow AHL2 sown July, just don’t like the idea of growing flowers instead of food ( Beans and oats ) but that’s the way it will be, submitted again today

You don’t need worry about flowers, flowers are a purpose not an aim. I have it in writing from the RPA that summer flowers are a would like not a must have, they are none binding in the birdseed option.

I have received exactly the opposite advice from the RPA.

It is Countryside Stewardship by a different name and will be Policed as such at a National Level.. 3yrs rather than 5yrs but the same really

Makes you think that just spread the bird seed on in late November. That you could have drilled. Just plant the cereal mix. God only know what the government is up too.

Yes, but will they set seed. Seed that is hard enough for a small songbird to eat.
