AHL2 - Winter Bird Food

Do Not assume the sfi will stay the same for ever nothig does

defra has shown they will adapt the rules of sfi bringing some of the restriction that applied to stewardship
such as maximum 30% of a parcel in grass blocks on arable land
other options in stewardship were restricted in area
agreements needed individual assesment and areas were knocked back if excessive early on
but when uptake was low they allowed bigger areas
last year every one was saying that the money would not get spent due to low applications
now they have restricted some of the excesses some are complaining

these restrictions will prevent land lords or their agents claiming 100 non productive actions and turfing tenants out
this will also allow the justification of apr for food production especially after the election

I think it is a big ask claiming two options in any less than a 24 month period, beginning from when the first option is actually established or planted.
Totally agree... with the amount of chat on these threads DEFRA has worked out that farmers are only going to get 1 main payment per Ha in a 12 month period and they will use their favourite phrase " double funding" as the reasoning... Surely they will release all the details of SFI 24 in the next few weeks or yet again land managers will be planning their autumn cropping based on todays info and many will miss another 12 month planning cycle... I dont think DEFRA care about this so long as it doesnt clash with school holidays!!

SFI and CS are being merged... hence the early announcement this week from Junior Minister Spenser... One IT platform. 1 application process.. 1 BPS payment ...1 love🥰😍

It will get extremely, even unmanageably complex, believe me. Folk talking of multiple SFI agreements on the same holding with different start dates, annual adjustments, etc. My guess is it will go the same way as the NHS records IT system.

Looking at a possible rotation is this doable W Barley, drill straight after harvest with AHL2,spring sownNUM3,WWheat?
I've been advised its possible,is it? or are/have they clarified this.:scratchhead:
Thanks
I think AHL2 should be established late April to early June to achieve its aims.

Really pushing it in July, possible but needs everything aligned.

Plenty are planning it however.

This is what’s gets the rules changed. People taking the proverbial. No way would birdseed drilled in July come to anything useful here. People are trying to have their cake and eat it. They’ll get their fingers burnt and frankly I’ve little sympathy.

From what I understand you have 12 months from when your agreement is accepted to actually carrying out the work. Not saying you should drill late as it might fail but you could drill AHL2 next spring and start getting paid for it in 3 months time.........?

The one change I would put to SFI would be to claim 3 years payment a requirement to deliver the sims 3 times. It’s entirely wrong to give 3 years payment to those delivering the aim only twice

The two year mix is not made up to all flower the year of sowing , its made up to last two years
So if you can get half the 2 year mix to flower and seed before winter sets in you should have achieved the aim ,

Is that if the AHL2 is staying in the same pace though, and not rotational?

Anyone have thoughts on using Winter Barley/Winter Triticale instead of spring varieties in a spring sown 2 year mix? I cant see anything in the rules (both Ahl2 and AB9) to exclude it but is it reasonable to believe they would set seed in either year?

Would die out in first year with disease and not seed because of no vernalisation, so no point?
