Dark data is data which has been collected by organisations but which has either been used once or not at all.
However, storing it on chips still takes up large amounts of energy even when it is not being used.
"On average, 65% of the data an organisation stores is dark data," says Prof Jackson.

How mad is that? We’re storing vast quantities of data from companies just for the fun of it.

We humans really ought stop calling it artificial, and just accept the reality that we are in fact already organic batteries for the real intelligence

How else could the world have been convinced that cows, sheep, and green grass are what's killing the planet? 🙄

News feed this morning, according to the Guardian, America fossil fuel production has never been higher

"Every hour of every day, on average, around 1m barrels of oil and 2m tons of gas are sucked up from oil and gas fields"

How much methane is that releasing, EVERY HOUR?

And America barely accounts for a fifth of known worldwide fossil fuel production, EVERY HOUR

Yet the NFU, the BFU, the AHDB, our devolved Governments, they all sit quietly saying nothing against the every growing need for fossil fuel, the real cause of planet pollution

@Grass And Grain isn't it past time livestock farmers had an organisation, a farmers union perhaps, shouting the utter lunacy of blaming ruminants for the pollution?

For if we leave it to artificial intelligence to come up with the answer, it isn't going to commit suicide by suggesting that it's own power supply is cut off

I Haven't been convinced grass and cows etc are killing the planet. I don't believe the majority of the population have either. Otherwise they would ALL be swapping meat for plant based alterative etc by now. But that is just not happening.

The real problem will be in the future when today's children who are being brainwashed are the ones doing the shopping. Bit OT sorry.

We've had a few members make representation to some of these councils who are voting for vegan menus. That's a start, but there's organisation lobbying these councils to go vegan based on ruminant methane.

Members have also had discussions with AHDB to change their website as AHDB seemed to go along with the narrative. Those BFU members were successful and AHDB have now changed some of their webpages and are now more accepting of GWP*.

Never ending amount of work to do on the subject. Any members want to get involved and organise a push back, then BFU are fully behind this as a major issue. Could do with a group of livestock farmers to head it.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that last sentence.

It’s pretty common knowledge that we're gonna have to keep digging the stuff up because there are no alternatives that can possibly cope in the short to medium term. Politicians make promises that they must know are utterly worthless. But they keep doing it.

Every "solution" they come up with falls short big-time but they keep hoping they’re gonna work. Stuff like carbon capture and storage are merely a scandalous way to keep the gravy train rolling while it passes by unmet target after unmet target after unmet target. Thankfully it seems the public (and some journalists) are becoming more cynical with every day that passes.

Nearly a fifth of Ireland’s electricity is used up by data centres, and this figure is expected to grow significantly in the next few years – meanwhile Irish households are reducing their consumption, external.
So cutting the power to data centres will create a surplus and lead to a reduction in price for the consumer???
