Ad lib? 1200kg?

How much do you reckon they've eaten of the barley? You've done a bloody good job!

Having ad lib silage they don't eat as much barley and ammonia smell of the barley means you are sure they will eat some silage and not just fill up with barley. The PH of silage at 4 and the barley at 9 is a good combination. Have tryed just barley and straw but they never seem to do as well, not sure if you can overload the ruman on alkaline the same as acid?

About 7.5kgs barley per day per head, so more like 675kgs for the finishing period.

We sent off a second calved Norwegian Red just before Christmas, she was a serious fat thing with no milk, she killed out at almost 500 kilos. Most of her mates are just over that live weight so I'm not really sure where she came from!!

Question for the spring calvers who rear their own heifers, how many calves to the acre? Obviously as they grow they'll need more and will depend on grass growth too, but say august/September how many/acre? They would be born february/March

I've got a nice 12acre block which is being fenced soon I'm hoping, was planning on doing a first cut and then grazing with calves, all hybrid grass, ph is 6.5 etc. Can cut any extra grass that happens to be there as and when needed through the summer, was thinking 50 should be about right for august/september? Rotationally grazed split into 1 acre paddocks for 2 days a time

In April we start with 180 on about 15 acres but by September they have over 100 acres. That has to see them through on all grass until December. They're not the best acres but they're far from my worst.

@Jdunn55 always nice reading your posts and enthusiasm for the job.

None of my business but your post the other day about hoping to be able to bring in big numbers of heifers in a years time got me thinking. Could be worth telling the accountant your plans, a bit of advice/forward planning regarding stock valuations and tax implications of upping numbers might be worth thinking on. Had a sore year getting mine to match when I took over a few years back....

Thankyou, I'm always worried I just come across as though I'm moaning 😂 I do like what I'm doing, honest...

Regarding the accountant that's a good idea, thankyou, I have absolutely no idea about tax so definitely need to speak to someone who does! Probably need to find an accountant first 😳🙈

big numbers of y/s, can hit cash flow hard. Worth bearing in mind, and as above, a bit of advice, might be worthwhile. Fine if all budgeted in properly.
All budgeted for at £1000/heifer (would be more if I was including my Labour but I'm free at present 😂 ) we had to extend the overdraft a couple of months ago in order to accommodate for the expansion but that was all planned when we applied for the loan and gave the business plan to my bank manager, the only issue being that at the time I hadn't allowed for feetiliser to quadruple in price along with everything else 😳 fingers crossed the milk price will make up the difference

What @Happy at it was alluding to is the tax man will want another 250 on top of the £1000 as they will go down on the balance sheet and increase profit. However it will be paid over 2 years and not paid until 23 and 24

No definitely not, never moaning.

The tax thing is a hard one, keep it in mind. Some difference in accountants, our new one has made such a difference. If you can find one that you don't have to chase to do the work, and will give you an idea of the payments on account/and balancing payments that are required for the next 18months will keep you thinking, instead of getting a surprise that you can't pay.
