Few pictures since start of calving, cows pre calving, some plantain hand broadcast in grazing has come for a bit of a trial, a genuine 4ft wide cow that eats plenty forage! Cow with 2 pictures is a decent looking Friesian cross 5th calver

Only take pictures of the good bits ;)
both cows and us, like the plantain/chicory, good job they do, at one stage it was all that grew. Interesting spin off, they happily munch fresh dock leaf's off, and they were not far behind the herbs, for keeping going.
In the really hot spell, it was only chicory that kept going, roots can go down 10ft or more.

Yes it’s a bit of a trial I’ve kept an eye on all the herbal ley/regen stuff and like the idea but need to make it work practically! It’s only cost a tenner for some tonic plantain I’m conscious of it taking over the farm though as people worked hard to get rid of rib grass years ago? It needs to work in rotational grazing here and it’s in a nice award of grass/clover so I can now tick the box of a herbal ley farmer?!? :ROFLMAO: I read Andre cousin book from all those years ago his trials showed the most palatable plant to a cow to be plantain so fingers crossed

we let 28 acres for maize one year, no idea of their spray programme, but after cutting we had 28 acres of wild plantain, the tack sheep spent part of every day on it, even when they weren't meant to.

There's a very steep dry bank in that field, 9 acres, fenced it off now, for safety reasons, young lads on big tractors, not enough sense, but grassed down inc plantain, 3 acres are now predominantly self-seeded 'tame' plantain, without it, and chicory, those acres wouldn't have been grazed more than a couple of times, r/grass just died out.

Good grass growth keeps it down nicely, as soon as grass slows/stops, in a dry spell, it then bulks up, which for us, is ideal, as we dry out. Most of our grazing leys have now been overseeded/spun on chicory and plantain, they are more reliable than r/grass in a dry spell. It's worth watching your cows grazing, some will select them, instead of grass, to begin with.

For us, having had 4 dry summers, in the last 5, they have been a godsend, along with c/foot, fesques etc, going back 10/15 years, if somebody had told me, we would be growing those, l would have laughed at them, now, they are a standard here.
