@Agrispeed is going to be ready for May, but started calving in Feb. How is it progressing @Agrispeed

Getting there. Still technically a suckler herd I think:D

Have a shed, have a concreted hole in the ground. Hopefully going in the next 3 weeks or so.:)

Currently milking 3 through the crush with a portable milker. Milking alfresco quickly gets boring. Only planning on milking problem cows until we're up and running.

We had no calves from 25th Feb to 14th March, which has helped.

14l from a freshish jersey OAD on hay tonight, didn't think that was too bad.

No regrets, as I could get the right cows at the right price this way.

Plenty of milk with your cereal then.

Have you got one of these yet?

A bit of shopping today

Local farm dispersal sale at beeston today, all 2nd calvers, probably paid a little too much, but genuine sale, i knew the history, and the cows on a similar low cost system to ours, so thought was worth a little extra.
I thought getting them into my parlour would be a problem

But with a little cake in they went ! View attachment 494554Nice quiet cows
What sort of money were they ? @farmertom said fresh calvers in the collective sale were strong money today. Another good herd in beeston on monday, might be another day out

Allt Ddu was in our discussion group, so knew the cows, and the system he had, @AGN76 yes tough cows but a bit of a shock for them, going from 700ft asl to 1200ft asl, a few of my grazing fields ar as steep as their old ones so should be right at home.
@pappuller the cows Ranged from £580 to £1900, I averaged £1320 for my four, all 2nd calvers. Im happy with what I paid, knowing the history is worth a little more.

Were the dearer ones fresh calved ?Autumn calvers amongst them ?

a quick look through the catalog showed the lower priced cows were the ones with higher cell counts, not much difference between the fresh or the autum calvers though
http://www.genusbreeding.co.uk/?bulls=end-road-beacon ( the left three below), featured heavily in the cows, i'm not much use with picking cows on paper, as when i saw a lot of the cows in the flesh, they were crossed off my list, the herd here is a licorish allsorts herd, with jerseys, brown swisses, sweedish reds, mainly frisians, and now 4 holsteins, two of them match my cows for size quite nicely, the other two stand nearly a foot above the rest, the Ai guy commented this morning ' I see you have bought at least two ! ' , they do stand out from the crown ! only just fit in the parlour !!!
