Doing her job in the gloom this morning

A great lead cow is hugely beneficial. She would pay for her keep even if she was empty for the next 4 years.
Wouldn't work on my farm though in four years she would be to fat to climb the hill
🤣
Yeap still in milk no idea on yield currently. I would guess at 13-15 litres. She’s still quite tight in the mornings

tend to find with our carry round cow that come October she gives up on milk production and goes on holiday.

We found that when the lead cow left the herd, it wasn't the one right behind her that took over.

It was one from about 4 behind.

We did it very successful when we where on spring block just got to remember to cut tails right off on the prids didn’t seem to work aswell on autumn so we now bring in and feed before hand guesss it’s the grass getting less quality not better

Considering synchronizing heifers to sexed at grass? More agro than its worth? Anyone done it?
Did it 2 years ago with my sucklers, 55% conception to first service and then ran bull after, but that was with conventional, think it cost £20/cow last time, going to give it a go next spring with my heifers and see what happens, think it costs £25/cow now though

I think it’s the grass quality change it’s like flushing for springs then the opposite for autumns we also had a change in type of heifer when went autumns so could be a factor as well those jersey types get in calf at the idea of a straw

Caught up on a fair bit of this thread eventually after a rather long hiatus . Seems labour is an issue everywhere for dairying. Quite happy that our current pita worker has given notice.
It's become more than tiresome that the lazy bàstard is either late or fails to turn up at all.
Why am I happy? Sack him you say?? Well. Accountant says if he leaves of his own accord he isnt entitled to his long service leave. Which as it stands is 6 weeks full pay.
He was on a fixed wage , rather than an hourly rate.... so prior to his giving notice he was told that his pay would be docked accordingly for every time he failed to show .
Sick of useless arseholes taking the pìss ......
Cows are on borrowed time here.....trying to run 1400 ac of irrigation plus everything else then milking as well is just to much.
The old girl and myself are in the shed everyday as it is. Only time I'm not is if I'm busy watering , or doing hay, or silage or sowing or lasering or ......you get the picture..... but seriously over never knowing if the arsehole will actually get out of bed in the morning.... twice this week already hes failed to show... All the other farm work I can handle on my own.... but not milking on top of it.... I dare say none of you have any experience with flood irrigation. Its extremely time consuming.....especially if you have 4 or 5 different lots to be looking after.... its 24/7 when your irrigating. All hours of the day and night, 7 days a week until your done.
33 years of milking cows. I have no intention of making it 40.
