Had to here, don’t want to lose more calves.Be far better letting them calve outside, and then leaving the calf run with it's mother for ten days.

Was on dairy farm the other day had an ongoing crypto issue , all they did was rehydration and loxicam, no other treatment, rarely lost one now they have learned to manage it. Calves were on a high rate of powder, cleanliness was very good (shared igloos about 10 to a pen, new shed on concrete, each pen rested before being re-filled, AYR calving).Knew it was too good to be true, would have been 2 weeks today without anything dieing on me!
Still alive atm but I've got about 0 hope
Extra frustrating as this one was born outside and dam had rotavec been having parafor, started scouring day before yesterday, drank 3l yesterday morning tubed with 2l of water yesterday lunch and drink 3.5l of milk last night, yesterday's temperatures were 38.7, 38.8 and 38.7 and had metacam day before yesterday for scour
Rubbish, many of ours are on that amount at the end of week 1.You’re killing them with milk
You can’t expect a week old calf to drink 6.5 lts of milk
You need to build milk slowly up to that level over a few weeks
Ours are on ad lib. Went to a talk last week, calves on ad lib will take up to 18l at that sort of age (more usually 12-15l)Over feeding is the exact cause
I’d be looking at 4 weeks before I would put 6.5 lts into them
training the new cowman ?3rd round. Had 18 units of N/acre this year. 30 units last year. View attachment 1034432View attachment 1034433
We will be at 7-8 l a day at day 10 and at 9l a day by day 14 but these are blues that will land at 45kg average birth weightCalf size I suspect
Powder? We will be at 7-8 l a day at day 10 and at 9l a day by day 14 but these are blues that will land at 45kg average birth weight
Ad lib totally different to 2 big feeds twice a day plus another feed in the middle of the dayOurs are on ad lib. Went to a talk last week, calves on ad lib will take up to 18l at that sort of age (more usually 12-15l)
Even if they’ve got signs of scouringRubbish, many of ours are on that amount at the end of week 1.
Shine oad on there website says 200g/ltrNever seen a powder recommended at 185g made up to a litre. What make of powder is that? Most are 150, a few 125.
The calf setup he’s got looks perfect@Jdunn55 get yourself some hutches to try, you’ll maybe be able to find a few second hand if your willing to drive a distance for them.
