We’re not. No idea how this occurred as it was a Danish heifer. Apparently incubation can be over many months

Every day is a school day (& BMCF is not rare with our vet saying he sees 2-3 cases a year but there is no vaccine so just bad luck)

Looks like this (Google image as an example)

I hate sheep ….

Had to have a freshly calved heifer shot this morning who the vet says had caught Malignant Catarrhal Fever - a form of Ovine herpesvirus-2 caught from newly lambed sheep or carrier sheep
Very obvious case and quite vile to look at
Only small bonus is that cattle to cattle transmission is very very low

Apparently they can infect via aerosol from a distance of 3 miles but I would expect Co-grazing and/or lambing in the vicinity of cattle is more likely

We have had 2 confirmed cases within the past few years, never seen it before that. Miraculously both have survived and one has had 2 calves since. Ours only really lost their sight, they weren’t too bad otherwise (wouldn’t have let them suffer). Our neighbours sheep are often on our land 😡

I am beginning to wonder how endemic ovine herpes is in the national flock.

It would be interesting to hear if others on here have had cases of BMCF. The Sainted Isle is, of course, riddled with sheep & cattle

Never had it before but had a case this spring.

Sheep lambing then bought in store lambs one end of shed, store cattle in the other end, same as previous years.

It was in a heifer as well so wondering if it affects them more than steers.

Thankfully only had the one case and the rest are now out of the long incubation period when it can show!

Had two different firms turn up and i was incredibley blunt. Iv never every purchased of a rep calling in.

other industries wouldn’t allow them to turn up un announced and walk into their work place.

But equally if they didn’t turn up you’d say sod em not heard or seen anything from them in months I’ll take my buisness else where. It’s a hard job keeping the balance right with a rep between keeping in touch vs being over powering and pushy.

Nobody ever seems to come to me, must be cause l'm surrounded by poor sheep farmer's and thinks there's no dairy units up here, plus I can't be seen from anywhere which helps

Iv never purchased of any reps who have turned up before. Any quotes from semen to machinery or dairy chemicals I email my requirements/spec. Honestly can’t see they have a place in our industry

That’s fair enough but I work on a basis if they can’t be bothered to make them self known to me then I won’t search for them. Granted yes I normally use the same suppliers so the others tend to have a 2 minute conversation saying we’re sorted thanks leave any glossy mags you have and I’ll be in touch if I decide to change but on the whole if I didn’t see my tractor salesman then I’d think sod yah I’ll buy a different colour when it came to it. Normally he comes bearing gifts anyway which is handy, calendars, diary’s, pens, cups etc.

we can never eradicate all the bugs from our stock, just as you can never get rid of reps.

had one in this morning, he has to visit/contact so many farmers a week.

knowing we were TB testing, he came to help out, good rep that, and he quoted price for a scraper ! But, he ticked his box for visiting. And he knows if we want anything quoted, we ask.

Weve had our tractor rep do an afternoon silaging in the past, he didn’t charge us, he was paid holiday from his ‘real’ job. Geus who had their share of commission from a new tractor that autumn?

dairy farmer not to far away, bought 36 dutch hfrs, from a friend of a friend, rather than through a 'reputable', 26 never calved again, digi and johnes, feet were awful, of the 10 left, 3rd calf ? doubt it. Yield was not good either, but that may have been 'poor' management here, all to save £120 ahead. Got a job to believe what some farmers will risk.
Did a search on here for Johnnes and Dutch heifers just now. Went to one of my customers today and whilst sitting to be unloaded while they finished milking and watched a hat rack walk from parlour to shed, I asked “ does she have Johnnes’’, he said yes approaching death, only been on farm three months. Beware this foreign Shyte they are sending over, they will know it’s likely infected that’s why it’s for sale.
