@the-mad-welder ,looking for someone to come and repair some ally irrigation pipes ,maybe 35 ,some already cut ready to join and some ends to put on , any ideas
Aluminium isn't my thing I'm afraid. Whenever anyone asks me about it I always steer them towards Uniseed Engineering at Stanton, 01359250469, ask for Mark. I expect you will want someone a bit closer though.

I tried the reel on gun during my welding course. to be honest, I found it too heavy, and the required speed more than I could manage. This was on sheet though, I feel pipe ends could be a nightmare.

have welded lots with the spool on gun in alloy & it is great no problems with the wire feeding at all and some was with 0.5mm wire making light weight tanks, done a lot of tubing as well with

In my fabrication days I had a spool-on gun for welding ally.

It takes a lot of practice to get it right and even then a MIG weld will always look "splattery" compared with a nice TIG weld.

Also, by the time you've bought some ally wire, a spool-on gun, rented some gas and melted several kilos of aluminium onto your workshop floor mastering the art, you could probably have hired a mobile man to weld your pipes for the next 5 years.

What Kinda wire feed is in the mig welder
I can run 1.2mm 5356 alu through a 15ft torch with no problems. My machine has a 4x4 wire feed and I use U shaped nylon rollers for alu the stop the deformation of the wire
You might not need a spool gun at all if your machine can feed it.
You could get a 10ft torch with a Teflon liner for cheap and just use that for Alu if needed
Get a d200 size roll first and try it out it might work handier than you think

Welder has 4x4 drive .will ask welding supplies how much for rollers and torch , And also ask Andrews suggestion of the firm at holbeach

And gas, pure argon for aluminium.

My welding teacher said welding aluminium's like eating a custard slice.
It develops an oxide layer that melts at a higher temperature than the stuff underneath.
So by the time you've bitten through the pastry (burnt through the oxide) the custard's running down your chin.

True, but ac breaks up the surface layer.
Cleanliness is the key, along with no draughts to blow the gas away and hitting it with plenty of power. Letting it heat up slowly isn't the way, hard and fast.
