Alternatives to Paypal?

Paypal suddenly announced that I would need to down load an ap to my non-existent mobile to generate a special code as an extra security measure so I could check my account. That lead to a whole heap of nonsense that had me Googling for answers to the title of this thread. I was surprised to read so many bad reviews about Paypal. Try it, you might be surprised!

Is anyone on here using an alternative and can give an opinion? Rankings on "best alternatives to Paypal" on the internet are highly suspect as they vary according to how much the one reviewed pays!

Although Paypal say my account is not secure, they still have no problem handing out my money for Ebay purchases, But if I want to access my account to do my tax returns I still have to download this ap to my non-existent mobile and give out yet more peronal information. I am coinvinced most of these security measures are just another way to harvest more information and give the user a lot of unnecessary hassle.

So, what's out there that works for you?

So this is interesting timing. I have a meeting on Friday with a bank to work on a type of "Farm Pay" account for farmers to use when buying things. Could be used with your email or TFF username as long as they are connected to an account. We are planning for use them for purchases on our platforms to start with, but then can in theory be used on any other platforms that support OAuth integration.

While it will be no Paypal, it should be useful to all farmers. We have found Paypal just doesn't work in most farming transactions as the 3% charged is often more than the margin involved.

I think the one I got is genuine enough and, yes, Paypal may still work, but I wonder how long for? I just tried to log in via the Paypal site and got this (I have deleted the links):

This is way out of my intellectual range but the process appears straight forward. If we can use a card, there doesn't seem to be any reason why we shouldn't use an intermediary, like Paypal?

I'd love to know if the authentication apparently required by the EU (see my other post) is actually a requirement as I don't think we are in the EU any more? Also, I am deaf and don't use a mobile. It infuriates me when companies assume I have a mobile or even insist that I get one. I've pointed this out to Paypal and they offered to phone me on my landline which doesn't work because I am deaf. Under the Equality Act 2006, reasonable provision must be made for my disability, i.e. deafness (which was quite fun when my guns were seized. The police seem to have a problem with joined up writing!). Then they said I could download the ap to my desktop, which didn't workeither because it wouldn't download. I am afraid I consider the actions of awkward people a challenge and generally manage to meet fire with fire. That's one of the perks of being old. So please keep up informed of TFFpay!

Stripe is just a processor - we use it on Farm Marketplace and here on TFF. It's a different thing to Paypal although can be used in the same way.

That's what the meeting is Friday to discuss the authentication process. The aim is it's all done on the device you are purchasing on - so if you are on a computer you don't need your phone. Even two stage verification wouldn't need a smart phone. Just a phone that can accept a text message. I will discuss your situation with them, but to use Farm Pay you will have had to create an account - like a bank account - so there will be more initial setup. Paypal is setup in seconds and therefore carries more problems.

Bad experience with PayPal means I sometimes refuse a transaction if it is the only method to pay. .....and will do for the rest of my days!

Paypal is OK for payments as a customer but it fleeces businesses that sell through them and even, as I understand it, now do not return commission on returned items. On high value items this can be a very substantial amount and makes Paypal hardly worth using for retailers.
Personally I like the convenience of paying with Paypal and have it linked to a credit card that is itself paid off by DD every month, so no charges apply to my using it.

paypal is very convenient for buying low value, low risk items on Ebay. (electrical components etc from China ) but I avoid it for everything else.

Two stage authentication is going to be "industry standard".
With Paypal you can have the code emailed or sent by text message.

Some "poor" experiences with Paypal have put me off using it for anything of value in either direction.

It is now a matter of principle. We are no longer in the EU so I'm damned if I am going to be threatened by THEIR rules! Anyway, I am quite enjoying giving them some hassle.

Paypal are robbing barstewards who charge in ordinate amounts of money for simple transfers. Avoid like the plague!
