Clive you hit the nail on the head here

  • What you / your operator likes ........ this is important to success !
If you want it to work you will do your damdest to make it work and get the best out of it. no matter what the colour but once you loose confidence in something pack up there and then. Andrew is the classic example with his freeflow that he loves it, allot of people wouldn’t have one given!! That doesn’t matter he can make it work for him.

Andrew has spent 20 years telling people how great is system is in the press every few weeks, he wont suddenly go back on that!

I think we all get invested one way or another.

For example I've had a lot of screw ups with no till osr but because I'm invested ie I have a bias (others may say blinkered) I continue to persevere to make the jigsaw work for me. And when it works it's great and I keep working on the bits that do work

I think we all have that bias in some way.

There’s bias, then there’s dismissing a whole farming system by basing your trials on the most difficult crop in the most difficult situation!

Gosh, that’s a sweeping statement,
speak for yourself 😀
I know but how often do you hear 'that's how dad always did it'.
Perhaps I was a bit harsh.
I bought a Claydon 3 years ago and have even started growing osr in a bid to help it work better, extending and varying rotation, meanwhile most if not all the neighbours around me, particularly older ones are not interested and are still plough/ph with 250hp tractors with 3m gear.
Completely satisfied with my choice, just wish I did enough to warrant an Horizon DSX.....!😆

Interesting, cos, around here between my self, neighbours and near neighbours, it’s mostly the older generation that seem to be switching, all the young guns still like roaring around cultivating and ploughing.
100% notill here, 8 years in and I wont see sixty again, I’m just a lazy old fart 👍

Having recently seen the results of the demo day the whole thing seems to have been a complete disaster. Everyones tried to draw conclusions and talk it up but the fact remains that the weather ruined the event, nothing performed well and its even damaged some manufactures reputations.
IMHO the whole thing needs to be run again in proper drilling conditions and if the weather turns then delay or cancel.

Best thing to say about it is don't draw any conclusions from it all. If you want to no till/ DD go and visit some people doing it

What is your mix?

I got a bit late so lashed on some rye off the heap and some radish with two passes of the fert spreader, spread some chicken muck on and then disced it in. The rye started off brightly but the radish has now swamped it.

Just something to keep the soil going before sugar beet in the spring and hopefully utilise the chicken muck.
What's wrong with rye and radish? Maybe you could find another plant type like a legume so you have a three way mix.
