Animal Rebellion Smithfield Protest- Could it work in our favour short term?

The protest to blockade Smithfield begins on Monday. In recent times the place has for many English abattoirs just become a dumping ground for unsold beef, to keep stock moving, losing them money due to the low prices there caused by competition from imported Irish, Botswanan, Namibian etc. etc. If the secondary wholesale trade can’t get their supply from there, they will be forced to go direct back to the abattoirs, which of course is British. It could just boost demand when it’s needed more than ever and help our firms clear some stocks.

I like your optimism! (y)

Off topic but just to correct a technicality, Monday's protest is by Animal Rebellion not Extinction rebellion. XR have done their best to distance themselves from AR, the co-founder of XR has told me direct that there is no connection with AR. The convenor of XR rural is a livestock farmer.

For anyone who says that is semantics, no it isn't it's an important distinction. Just as farmers get annoyed when organic/conventional/pasture fed/intensive gets lumped together by the outside world, so it is for protest groups.

I stand corrected

Yup, it's the Vegan mafia trying to capitalise on XR's campaigning in an attempt to further their own narrow agenda and try and make their militant cause look 'environmentally' virtuous.
Nothing more than a bunch of 'cunning stunts' trying to hijack another groups bandwagon.

I cannot wait to see these protests, if there was one group of people i wouldnt want to tackle it would be the smithfield meat boys, and i cannot see they will give a s#it about these numpties.

Skinny entitled whiney vegan f**kwitts expecting the Smithfield guys to 'respect their human right to non violent protest' ?
I would pay good money to watch that on TV: like watching Tyson Fury effortlessly taking on fifty 'Wheres Wally's' at a time.
If the Police have a sense of humour they'll be very slow to intervene, and let these 'activists' get what they're asking for.

Unfortunately the public will not see it that way, they will see a protest by very similar looking people talking about a very similar narrative and think they are one and the same. In any case Gail Bradbrook has formally been an animal rights activist and the crap that she and XR are spewing out is being misconstrued by thousands of people who are demonising honest hard working and hard pressed family farmers, I would not trust her as far as i could throw her. There may well be a planet emergency - who knows, but turning livestock farmers, many of which are some of the poorest people in the developed world, into social pariahs (and this is exactly what XR are contributing to) is not going to stop the ice caps melting.

Extinction Rebellion are not demonising anyone.
They have 3 stated aims;

1] For governments to be open and honest about environmental problems

2] To reduce green house gas emissions to net zero by 2025

3] For government to create a Citizen's assembly on climate change and ecological justice.

XR have not targeted individuals, businesses or sectors. Those that are, such as Animal rebellion, may be supporting XR but they do not have the support of XR.

I never said they were, but their messages are being misconstrued by many, Animal Rebellion, PETA, VIVA! Etc to justify demonising livestock farmers. Have we ever actually herd Bradbrook or any of these others come out and say livestock farmers are great and we need them? No, and you won’t because they would alienate many of their hardcore supporters who all share the same beliefs and ideals.

In solidarity
We also work in solidarity with Extinction Rebellion (XR), with whom we’ve joined forces as part of a Rebel Alliance.
We have a massive amount of common ground with XR, and we believe that by banding together, we can achieve far more for animals and the planet than we could otherwise.

What’s happening at Smithfield?
On October 7, we will arrive at Smithfield Market, one of the world’s largest wholesale meat markets, and a symbol of the destructive animal farming industry. Thousands of rebels will occupy Smithfield’s iconic archway.

I think the final para of that sums it up better than we can. They - the protest movement - have their internal issues, just as farming does.

Of course, we have our disagreements with others who are taking part in the October Rebellion - Animal Rebellion believes that animals should not be treated as commodities, whereas some in the Rebel Alliance still hold that animals should be part of the food system.
