Another livestock market to close

Location
Devon
Been announced today that the historic 800 year old cattle market at Newton Abbot will be closing down.

Reason is the landowners = the local council are selling the land so a hotel/ parking can be built on it.

Thame market is to let in the farmers guardian this week
I had a guy call in from Thame looking for finished cattle for some deadweight tie up they’ve got. I don’t have any finished cattle but it seemed a very odd way to go about the job. Surely if you’re a mart you should be sourcing cattle to go through the ring?
If I was a farmer who wanted to sell deadweight wouldn’t I just ring round a few slaughterhouses for the best price rather than get a market to do it for me? Or am I missing something?

The difference is that not many deadweight centres will call you direct to see if you can supply any cattle.

But the Auction mart will get frequent requests from deadweight centres for cattle (and sheep), often because the deadweight centre wants to source animals direct from farms rather than through auction marts.

And the auction mart will know what spec the buyer is looking for, and if need be will help you select the animals that are suitable and maybe obtain a better price on your behalf. There will be commission in most cases, but there might be free transport.

Staff at auction marts can be very helpful, particularly for the small guy and certainly for farmers with less experience or 'market knowhow'.
