Another which Tablet thread but for my dad

I am thinking of getting a tablet for my father. He has been diagnosed with Alzheimers and is in no way computer literate, can barely answer his mobile phone sometimes (not due to his condition, just his hands are huge). This means whatever i get him has to be simple to use, something that is easy to get the hang of. Ease of use is the main issue, i plan to get get him a few brain trivia apps and that as well.

When i think tablet i think Apple but my knowledge is limited on such things, i have only ever had one iphone and from all the phones i have had its been the easiest to use hands down. I have had Samsungs, blackberries, nokias, htc's over the last few years.

I'm not great on computers, we've got both apple and windows PCs and iPad. I find the apple ones very easy to use and the windows PC not! I like my iPad, it's straightforward.

The iPad is easiest to set up and use, but there's not much in it really.

Don't be upset or surprised if he can't get his head around using it at all and isn't interested. It depends on how switched-on he was and currently is.

Don't know how able he is to learn but if it's more about puzzles and brain trivia then surely the requirements will be very basic. Whilst I would say iPad I would also say don't stretch yourself for it if it's not being used to its potential. Perhaps something off the bay? Huddl maybe and see how he gets on with it? Father in law is very worried about the brain getting slow and doing crosswords and puzzles like crazy, never reaches for one of his iPads though, I think as the brain gets older it doesn't naturally reach for something modern.

He is expressing an interest in learning the computer to do emails, the youtube, and skype as well, so im thinking the i pad or similar. He is an avid reader from theology to agriculture he prob has a few hundred books in the house. I think it will help him to search things he is interested in aswell. He has tried my laptop a windows system and finds it difficult. If he is willing to give it a go i'll try anything. Hes only been diagnosed about a year and he is doing great some you wouldnt think anything is wrong, but there are days its like dealing with a primary school child.

iPad then. It most likely to give him the best experience for a first tablet easily.

I've got one myself. Only he can't see much and can't hear much and certainly couldn't use an iPad. He can't make a cup of tea or heat anything in the simplest of microwaves. That's not all down to his dementia though, which is not what I'd call 'severe', although both short and long term memory are pretty bad.

If you're looking for a cheap (ish) tablet, have a look at wowcher. I haven't bought anything through it but I get the blurb through and there's often tablets on it. Last week there were reconditioned iPads on for £149, with a guarantee. Might be worth a look.

Bought Mum an iPad last Christmas, the least computer minded person you could meet is hooked, emails friends, takes photos, googles etc etc....
Has been a real boon to her...worth every penny.
