As title says.
What's the pro's and con's of buying reared calves off one of these firms?
I know they are all same age, in one batch, all vaccinated up.
Just seem a bit pricey to me for the age they are and how long they will be on the farm. At the end of the day it's all about profit.
Thanks in advance.

Looked into it but they are to dear in the first place. You have to buy them right and unfortunately as good as there calves look they are to dear. Others might find it different. I completely understand buying batches is ideal. Blade calves are similar money when I last enquired and you get 20ppk bonus of fr bulls and think 40ppk bonus on angus. That helps. Although only ever had one bunch from there.

If you are a regular buyer try and form a relationship with a calf rearer all agents do is take margin from you and the rearer .
We rear calves and now supply 5 finishers direct it seems to work but has taken a while to organise

I've had a couple of lots of small stores from them and been fairly happy with them. I deal with David Bostock and he knows what I want to pay so doesn't bother trying to sell me anything dear.

Well until this week the bonus at ABP for Angus was between 50/60pk for anything under 2 years...( not blade cattle )

Personally i think you are better off either buying direct from a rearer of buying stirks straight out the ring.

Steers or bull's definitely no heifer's. Anything that looks like it has a chance to make a pound or 2 Trying to keep off bw's I seem to have acquired a lot of Herefords lately.
Yeah I try to keep away from black and whites. Iv got a decent end market for continental bulls, what sort of size you buying at?

This was what I thought. Can get them out or store ring a lot cheaper. I don't know any calf rearers though in Yorkshire.

You could pick up smart char x suckler heifer's 9 months old today for around £460/ head..

Try your local farming selling pages on facebook, loads of people around here sell calves/ weaned calves etc on them.

Completely agree about buying yourself just telling it as it is. Blade put me off after first bunch. Group of bulls 2 were castrated 1 died 3 days after being here and didn't find them particularly well reared. I wanted them as they kept on about not going through market but three had been through market!
