Has anyone moved this seasons rye yet , autumn pool? Ours is in the spring pool , asked the trader for a rough idea when they envisaged moving it bearing in mind the markets at the moment and was told they were struggling to find buyers ? If you cant move it this year when can you , or trader talk.........
What price are they offering?

When I enquired about growing some earlier this year this is exactly what I was told. Seems strange that contracts to grow are available but no sellers available?

We are including our own rye in our poultry rations this year, but as it’s a low protein grain it needs a fair bit of soya meal and soya oil to balance it. And because the prices of those two ingredients are sky high it means there isn’t really a cost saving to including the rye. Which probably indicates why feed homes aren’t as interested in it?

If soybeans were cheap then it would probably get more interest.

I was always told that fowl didn't eat rye! I have 500 acres sold in various contracts. But I grow in a ploughed situation. This is to reduce risk of ergot. To be fair the only ergot I sem to get is in late tillers tramlines, easily solved by running the sprayer over pre harvest. Yield up to 10t/ha on light land.

Please can someone tell me how to get it established in a no-till situation? It just doesn’t seem to want to germinate if there’s any straw or chaff next the seed. I like it when it grows, it rockets away in the spring and is very competitive.

Takes forever with these pools , the rye has ended up at £211 in the spring pool and 8.4t/ha so all good , we have some getting ready for spraying off now but think we will still go back to barley next year or will we ???? which livestock will need feeding in the future is anyone's guess

EHHHHHHH, it's not that early. On our land we are cutting it about the same time as wheat, probably mid august, maybe the 20th as a start date some years.
That doesn't sound so good. 😕

I thought it would be similar time to winter barley. Might have to wholecrop it if looking like being late.

20th August normally our starting date for spring barley.

Thought ours was ripe but went to look this morning and still a surprising amount of green in it, big root system has let it hang on longer in the heat maybe?
Apparently it feeds itself from stem more than wheat hence why has a tiny flag leaf but this loses alot less moisture through transpiration than wheat, so perfect for this dry heat! I can't beleive on our lightest field it can still be green!

It will be after spring barley, there are a few guys growing it around. I’ve looked at it a few times. It seems to stack up if you can feed it yourself (pigs) and use the straw. Not sure there is a big enough demand locally to sell it. Was the seed very expensive?
