Outside events conspire against making a start on winter cereal seeding until the coming werkend. I'm beginning to feel its getting too cold for no-till dd here in the west country. Most stubbles are untouched apart from straw taken off.
Feel I now have to plough due to the fact BG will be an issue if its just min tilled now.
Bit of a bugger really.
Am l the only arse who hasn't drilled anything yet.

Just drilled WB yesterday evening/this morning, one field DD (my first attempt at DD cereals) and the other min-tilled. Near perfect seedbed conditions and hopefully the cooler temps will suppress the aphids that buggered things last year.

As mentioned above, this first week of October is more like 20th September weather - soil temperature is still above average even if it is dropping a bit this week so nothing to worry about there. No rain forecast here for the next 10 days so I haven't drilled anything yet, only a bit of contract drilling winter barley done so far. If BG is an issue you shouldn't be drilling until now anyway. I have enough BG (although less than it was) and I don't intend it to make it worse by drilling in September. Therefore, spraying off raked stubbles for the second time this week ready for drilling wheat next week with the Claydon, and winter beans in 3-4 weeks time. If you have a lot to do, you won't have time to plough it all now, so direct drill at least some.
