April/May heatwave this year

If they look at nightime temps as well, and they stay above normal it skews the perception that its cold but actually "warmer" than average. The temp was probably more consistent throughout a 24 hour day, rather than having nice warm days and cold (or potentially frosty in April) nights

A daft thing to say when it's never been warm at all. If we have 20 degrees through the day and 6 degrees at night we have an average of 13 degrees, if it's 16 through the day and 11 at night because it's always cloudy or wet the average is 13.5 degrees.
It shows that you can say anything with statistics.

I heard on the radio, it's average temperatures that are up, so since it's been a degree or two warmer overnight the numbers are up, but it's still cold and wet in the day so nobody felt the benefit. I'm sitting here in a sweater with my oil radiator switched on because it's as cold as it was in March.

The BBQ "barometer " says its been wet and cold here its now the 11th of june and weve had 2 . each time ive suggested it since the end of march weve ended up with an indoor bbq i.e. same food just cooked and eaten in the house even this last couple of weeks. In years gone past especially with the advent of a gas burner in the gazebo weve oft had a bbq either mid week and at least one or both of either sat/sun this year has been the worst . Some weather fecker spouting on tv says its been the warmest may on record ,well I can tell them its been fecking cold round here and wet.

We have not been in the sea for a swim yet so yes it is cold
