I did it last year, despite everyone on here thinking I had the perfect farm ( Silverfox).
We came to the conclusion it was best to get out at the top, so to speak , before becoming the grumpy bent double old farmer you see frequenting the market . Young enough to enjoy the fruits of our labour and to do something completely different . Loving every minute and enjoying 2 part time jobs that have taken me in a completely different direction. I think it was more luck than judgement, but finished with a high price, high yield harvest and missed the high Input poor weather harvest this year, and the trying autumn we are having now .

Balders I have no choice but to prostrate myself at your feet (however foul the aroma may be) and there to grovel in abject acquiescence to beg your obviously superior knowledge.

Pray tell me how you manage to put that apostrophe thingy above the ‘e’ in touché?

As a mere ignorant peasant without the public school education and all the attendant onanistic benefits that such might confer upon flagellants such as yourself and your like minded friends; I am utterly unable to match your sublime literary skills in placing such attachments above the ‘e’ when replying to your juvenile ramblings.

Love yer loads Balders, despite the fact that most on here don’t; and despite the fact that you are, not to be too blunt about it, rather weird: and do often march to the beat of a different drummer.

With my kindest regards, I am as ever yours,
DeeGee.

Aah! The Taffia!

The very epitome of Orwellian dystopia. ‘Cardiff good. Westminster bad!’

‘Imagine the boot heel of oppression forever stamping down on a face!’

This is the monster that has been created in Wales. Forever holding the reins of power Big Brother is always watching you, this is the future for Wales.

The Taffia will always be elected because everyone in Wales hates the Tories: and rightly so due to their oppression of our nation over the centuries.

But will nobody think of electing a third party that could be elected if based on integrity, insight, knowledge and professional expertise in fields such as science, economics, social welfare, medical advancement and a raft of other skills far in advanced of the age old and hackneyed entrenched politics of division, vitriol and tired old sound bites that will forever consign both Wales and the UK to financial ruin and social division ad infinitum?
Even England seems better place?

Thought I'd start a poll on whether any/many members are planning on chucking the towel in given the multi faceted sh!t we seem to be dealing with at the moment. And whether you could be persuaded against it.
No , because I did about 2.5 years ago.
If the urban world can not appreciate primary production and pay a fair price then they can get fecked.

I nearly called in to see you on Tuesday when on my way back from Ludlow with a leech jar...

Having moved farms twice in 25 years, built 3 holiday cottages and started to feel I might not want to farm forever anything is possible.
It all depends on the next generation.
We'd need 500 good acres to earn what we do now on 150 with extras so why move?
Not ready to have neighbours that aren't paying us £500 a week for the cottage. ;)

l am certain that over the next few years, our farm will be very different than it is today.

number crunching, looking at all options, dairy will go, schemes maximised, and life will be a lot easier.

i'm one of those crippled old farts, we used to laugh about, in market, decades ago. Don't want that for son, so its really down to what he wants to do.

one thing already decided, we won't borrow a huge amount, to update the dairy, which is needed, just don't trust the retailers, RT etc, to ensure the return is achievable.

in any case, a more relaxed type of farming, sounds quite nice, we don't need to earn a fortune, and certainly don't feel the need to provide food for the consumer, that blames us for climate change, sod them.

Quite telling while I have no clue to the final results the current result at this time, that only 64% ish want to say on meaning that nearly 36% are on the fence or have or will pack up in the next 2 years.

that’s very high, but not unexpected with industry changes and uncertainty volatility in the markets for inputs and outputs putting the stakes even higher that normal.

it seems to me DEFRA has mishandled this the timing and lack of clarity of new new policy roll out, there lack of policing of the indusrty that allowed supermarkets to exploit farming like the egg industry, that were under extraordinary pressure yet were the only part of the supply chain not to benifit from higher egg prices in super markets, while being hit the hardest of any part of the supply chain.

it’s things like this that disrupt the entire balance of the farming indusrty, egg production was cut because no profits could be made so feed demand dropped which rolled down to decreasing demand for feed so then created a net surplus of feed in the uk which meant we had to export feed which means prices fell to be competitive on the world market ( yes it makes a big difference it you are a net importer or net exporter)

as they say s..t rolls down hill never up. And we always seem to manage to be close to the bottom.
