Hauling bales today in the rain and the battery light on the dash came on and stayed on.

I suspect the alternator. I know how to do the test on the battery, should be 12.5 engine off and 14.5 when running show the alternator is charging Anything less that 13.5 and the alternator is knackered.

Is it as straight forward as that to isolate the problem or could it be something else if I get a low reading?

The reason I ask is I don't want to spring for a new alternator at the claas dealer and then find it wasn't the alternator after all.

Also, do alternators just go like that, no warning etc.

Thanks in advance.
