Don't forget to bring your 60ml of ketoprofen to jab every cow with for 3 days. 400 calving a year. Every lameness case another 400? 800 x 60. £48000 on ketoprofen and time to jab every cow for x3 a day. Are arla actually having a joke. beyond a joke lol.

What a tedious Monday morning spent learning about how we should all have more robust cows. Atleast we've ticked the extra lever box...

Should we not? Even those with decent figures already would be no worse off with an extra lactation out of them. Some herds have undoubtably got room for improvement when it comes to mortality rate, there’s a big financial incentive there within your own business as well as from a climate perspective.

This is what used to be known as business sense. No other justification should be needed. Wtf’s climate bollox got to do with it?

It still is business sense that’s why I was questioning the negative attitude towards it. If there’s an environmental positive to come out of it in terms of more meat going back into the food chain or less inputs used raising heifers as replacement rate drops then it’s a win/win.

I wasn‘t being negative towards it, and you weren’t either, it’s just the "need" to attach a climate angle to it that I found entirely unnecessary.

Plus morally.

it’s the one good thing about Arla and other milk buyers “ making” farmers attend meeting. They are reaching farmers who wouldn’t normally engage with other forms o advice etc. like the Ahdb for example.

No problem with what Arla or others are doing and looking outside of your own business is not a bad thing but remember outside advice got us here today where cows have a shorter lifespan than is ideal and dairy bull calves are worthless.

I would question your point on dairy bull calves being worthless as they are an important part of our business and a side line that has paid dividends over the years especially when we were shut down with tb as we had a ready market for them.

The situation has improved greatly IMO probably due to sexed semen, Arla's 10 week policy and a change of mindset but there are still a fair amount of calves sold to slaughter that dont cover the cost of semen and a pair of tags
