Arlageddon

Would have put this in the Arla thread but have been told i'm not welcome there.

Ignore the fact that it's some internet chancer trying to get people to pay for access to further detail. That's not the point. The point is that it's now out there. Milk - as natural and nutritious food as you will find - is now tainted. Its production is to be meddled with in the name of climate change. That's what you are signing up to.

(As an aside that was sent to me by a full on lentil knitter, who cares deeply about food, farming and the environment. Just the sort of person who is on your side. Just the sort of person who is so often slagged off on here.)

Funny isn’t it that there is a European trial with over 10000 cows involved that supply most of the big dairies across Europe not just Arla.
Also DSM who manufacture the Bovaer feed supplement used are in talk with most British dairies and feed companies so why the OP says this is just Arla I do not know but hey Ho he has to blame someone.

Inhibiting natural rumen function - does this lead to less efficient cows (less milk produced/lower FCE)???

Any data on their effects yet?? Fine feeding the stuff if it doesn’t affect productivity/cow health

Prof Chris Reynolds at Reading said a couple of years ago that there are lots of things that can reduce methane emissions in cows in the short term, but over time the gut microbiome will adapt to them and the gut will resume normal function. I would be interested to see how many years the trials run for,

personally, I think that the length of the trials is irrelevant.
Methane inhibitors as a ruminant feed are not natural.
No discussion, no ambiguity.

Anyone who has been hearing the recent prime time R4 series titled The Cows Are Mad, will soon realise the high risk strategy our industry is heading with regards to playing god with cows diets.

Will the next programme be titled "The feed companies are mad"

not bloody likely, because the cows are being sacrificed on the alter of fossil fuel hierarchy and our industry leaders are facilitating it.

I don't agree with feeding chemicals to alter the digestive mechanism of the cow. Although there will be big corporate interests in doing such a thing.

A domesticated cow's job is to eat green fodder to look after herself, grow a calf and produce milk. Humans are obsessed with unnecessarily buggering about with stuff.

It's a fair point. I did try 'Mullergeddon' but it didn't work so well. I don't just throw this sh!t together you know.

I got forwarded an nfu newsletter recently (not a member) and they are pushing for methane inhibitors in feed. That will shock nobody on here given their stance that farming causes climate crisis or whatever nonsense it is.

The earthshot prize last year gave £1m to company making methane masks for cows.
This year, having walked to Singapore, the great and good were looking at methan inhibitors in cattle diets.

Please tell me methane inhibitors are not based on antibiotics?

The one in this year's finalists for the above, was seaweed based.

Ref the milk brand in the article, does anyone know what the feed additive is ?

Possibly seaweed. Maybe not.

To be fair most of the cows diet now would be pretty unnatural.

Speak for yourself - it's the high protein additives, or extended milking period jabs (US / BST) that are not plant based.
