Automation

Saw that, but the cranes weren't allowed to be autonomous where humans are on the ground.
Would that alter the self driving tractor option if a public footpath runs through your land ?

And after the accident wino the self driving car last week, I feel their is a long way to go.

Until Knight industries can do vehicles like they did for Michael Knight, I think legislation will hold it back.

It will all be down to money. If a big firm makes a big enough donation in to the right place legislation will change over night, you don’t seriously think they are thinking of joe public do you.

Forget the self driving tractor, automation in farming will be carried out by lots of little robots. This company are testing now have products to use by 2021. They have a rental model rather than a purchase model.

I am really supportive of this type of thing. Fendt are doing something similar. It will give a vast improvement in soil structure. However I don't know how they will cope with harvesting the tonnage of silage, beet or potatoes for example.

I think that will probably be done conventionally for a while but imagine not having to blanket spray a field because you can have a robot spot spray? How much time would you save?

Robot vehicles will eventually have a superior operational safety record than human operated versions.

A robot driven truck will never speed, never drive overweight, never get tired or get caught using a phone. It will never tailgate another vehicle or cut anyone up on a roundabout.

Watch the footage of tesla cars avoiding accidents. Few humans can react that quickly.

They will, but there are so many variables that, even with pooled / cloud data, it will take a fair few years for them to have most things covered, let alone everything. But they'll come, which may be regretted later.

We are a lot further away from Mini Robots than everyone is talking about, 10-15 years IMO. For example you can't leave a Fire-star system on the cab with out it being nicked.... culture has to change before technology.

I think you are right, but as much as technological advances are important, the price of the final article will be more so. Once something that is very hard to get and now costs £10k can be bought for, say, <£100, the whole game will change. Add to the price factor the fact that there will be real-time 360 degree cameras on board and that the things will work in groups, and theft / vandalism will be pretty much irrelevant.

If @ollie989898 is right and the population falls, we probably won't regret the advances. I suspect that a more static population - in the UK of about 70-80m - is more likely.

Our job will be to sit on one of the drones and guard them against being nicked or running off to take part in Robot Wars.
