Axle stands for tractor.

hi

I am after some recommendations for a pair of axle stands suitable for a 100-120hp tractor. Only to be used occasionally for servicing and wheel removal. Use concrete blocks at the minute but want something a bit lighter.

Cheers

Don't use concrete blocks, it can crumble! Better off with a big bit of wood, or make something like a "saw horse" shape from a bit of heavy channel, not explaining myself very well, imagine an upside down u shape with a flat top, and two stabilising legs at 90 degrees to the horizontal to sit on the ground. And if you dont have a brace across the bottom, you can put the trolley jack under the top flat bit to lift up the tractor, take off the wheel, drop the trolley jack and the axle is sitting on the stand. I was always told, metal on metal can slip, so always put a bit of wood between the stand and the axle too.

But of H beam the right length for the height you want with a heavy flat plate across the top with the ends bent up and 2 lengths of heavy duty angle to make a decent width foot at the bottom

Would you still recommend the above as considering getting a pair, what weight capacity would you all recommend for tractors up to 250hp.?
Yes I’d still recommend them, I have two sets now and they’ll get used most days without any sign of fatigue.

As for what hp tractor, thats slightly irrelevant, it comes down to how much weight you want to put on them.
Just remember your generally only supporting one corner of a machine not it’s entire weight, so a 12 ton machine will only have around 4t on each back corner and 2t on the front corners. So a 6t stand will normally be ok.

It usually comes down to how much you need or want to spend.
6 ton in one corner is probably going to plenty, but if you want to be secure.

You can buy them for sure but when i went pricing heavy duty axle stands i couldnt understand where the money was in them, so much so i got a lth of 50x50x6 angle, some off cuts from the bin and made up this pair about 18mths ago.
its not everybody's cup of tea but i saved about 80% of the cost price in doing so.

My concern is we are only alive once/ die once, you can’t put a price on life, so although I may only use the axle stands and wheel mover once I hope they are means to saving my life. I could borrow / hire but tempting when in a hurry to say to hell with it I will manage with some old blocks of rotten wood , and I can balance that rear wheel, but when it goes over centre and crushes me I will have a painful death, as I work alone.

Happened to a friend of mine. Left a widow and two young children, :(
Terrifies me changing tractor wheels and Same 90 is the biggest I ever did.

I know im being dramatic but i think if if went wrong some bloody bad things could happen and u live .
Hands , legs are really useful.
I made a pair bit like tinmans at college , i regularly trip over them in shop and only use every other year but they aint eating owt . There when required.
Same logic with chocks , was thinking about it so just got them bloody ordered.

Wheel trolleys are worth every penny, not only do the make the job safer but speed the job up as well. Smooth level concrete helps though, definitely wouldn’t be without mine now.

Probably the best, non hydraulic or crazy price (sprayer jack types) stand I have. Has a bearing race so will jack up to a fair load too.

10 or 15 ton. 6 is too flimsy for tractors 90hp+
